Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, has refrained from holding a formal press conference for over 50 days and has declined to provide specifics on her plans for her first day in office.
Vice President Kamala Harris's reluctance to engage in traditional press conferences has raised concerns about her willingness to face public scrutiny. Despite being the presumptive Democratic nominee for president for 50 days, Harris has yet to hold a formal press conference, opting instead for limited interviews and pre-taped appearances.
This evasion of press scrutiny has drawn criticism from both conservative and liberal commentators. Tim Young, a conservative influencer, asserted that Harris should "absolutely hold regular press conferences" and that "anyone who wants to lead the free world should be able to handle questions from the press." Curtis Houck, managing editor of NewsBusters, a conservative media watchdog, echoed this sentiment, stating that Harris "obviously owes it to the American people to hold free-wheeling press conferences where reporters can ask follow-up questions."

During her recent pre-taped interview with CNN's Dana Bash, Harris faced questions about her policy reversals on issues such as fracking and immigration. She also defended her decision to back President Biden's mental acuity after he dropped out of the race, despite expressing concerns about his age during the debates.
Despite Harris's efforts to present herself as a unifier, she has been criticized for dodging tough questions and avoiding accountability. Jorge Bonilla, host of Conservative Radio Libre, believes that Harris's lack of press conferences is "almost irrelevant" because she continues to receive a pass from the media.

"She is highly unlikely to do a press conference because the media have enabled and encouraged her 'plexiglass basement' strategy, wherein she preserves the illusion of being out there while remaining wholly inaccessible to the press and therefore unaccountable," Bonilla said.
Houck concurred, expressing disappointment that Bash's interview did not cover a wider range of topics, including Harris's past remarks on school shootings and her support for ending private health insurance. He also suggested that the liberal media may view the CNN interview and upcoming ABC debate as sufficient interview time.
Kamala Harris Dodges Day 1 Plan, Avoids Press Scrutiny
Former President Trump, who has recently sat for several lengthy interviews and held two press conferences, has sought to highlight the contrast in media availability between him and Harris.
While some have praised Harris's ability to handle the majority of questions during the CNN interview, her decision to bring Governor Tim Walz for support has raised questions about her confidence in facing the media alone.
Kamala Harris Dodges Day 1 Plan, Avoids Press Scrutiny
As the presidential election draws closer, Harris's avoidance of press scrutiny is likely to become a growing source of concern. Voters have the right to know her plans for office and to hold her accountable for her past statements and actions. Harris's unwillingness to submit to the same level of public scrutiny as her opponents undermines her credibility and raises doubts about her suitability for the presidency.
