A progressive minister hired by Vice President Kamala Harris has come under fire for her controversial views, including claims that White Christians have "hijacked" the Christian faith and that America is an imperial "cult."
Vice President Kamala Harris recently appointed Rev. Jennifer Butler as her campaign's faith director, a move that has sparked controversy due to Butler's outspoken views on White Christians and America.
Butler, a progressive Presbyterian minister, has written a book titled "Who Stole My Bible?" in which she argues that "the wealthy are overwhelmingly White and those who are systemically economically disadvantaged are people of color." She also claims that "White supremacists have 'hijacked' the Christian faith" and that "the imperial cult of the United States of America" is "bloodthirsty."

Butler's appointment has been met with criticism from some religious leaders. Kristen Waggoner, president of the Alliance Defending Freedom, accused Butler of "bullying" and "name-calling" Christians. She said, "We know that religious freedom is a fundamental human right ... and it suggests that Rev. Butler isn't about religious freedom or bringing together people of faith, but instead dividing, polarizing, and using political ideology to separate."
Butler has defended her views, stating that she is "bringing faith voices for justice" into the Harris-Walz orbit. She said, "The Harris-Walz campaign is a really unique opportunity to shift the debate, to engage all of those who are concerned about what a Trump presidency would mean."
