A high-profile interview between Vice President Kamala Harris and CNN has raised concerns about her credibility and revealed a lack of accountability by the news network. Critics argue that the interview failed to delve into substantive policy details, leaving Americans with a "trust issue" with their potential future president.
Vice President Kamala Harris's first formal interview since emerging as the Democratic nominee has sparked controversy, with critics arguing that it failed to address substantive issues and raised concerns about her credibility.
Journalist Mark Halperin, a former MSNBC host, delivered a scathing review of the interview, calling it a "disaster for journalism." He accused CNN's Dana Bash of being too soft on Harris and not pressing her on crucial questions that voters cared about.

"Kamala Harris did good enough but she largely did good enough because the questions were not even close to good enough," Halperin said. "The questions were soft. The follow-ups were almost non-existent or soft. There were topics that were covered that shouldn't have been covered. There was way too much fluff."
Halperin also criticized CNN for using "bumpers and teases" that promoted Harris's campaign rather than providing unbiased journalism. "I think it was a disaster for journalism," he concluded.

Republican Congressman Dan Meuser echoed Halperin's sentiments, saying that Harris "avoided a trainwreck" but that Bash failed to hold her accountable with follow-up questions.
Despite the criticism, some liberal outlets praised Bash's performance. The New York Times said she "ticked through the biggest questions looming over Ms. Harris's young candidacy" while Poynter's Tom Jones described it as a "good night" for both Bash and Harris.

The interview has raised concerns about Harris's ability to connect with voters and effectively lead the country. Critics argue that her performance revealed a lack of substance and a tendency to deflect questions, leaving Americans questioning her trustworthiness and qualifications for the presidency.
The criticism of CNN's handling of the interview also highlights the broader issue of media bias and the need for balanced and objective reporting. Many viewers feel that the news media often fail to hold politicians accountable and that this has contributed to a decline in public trust in both the media and the government.
As Harris continues her campaign and prepares for potential debates, it remains to be seen whether she can address the concerns raised by her critics and build the trust of the American people. The outcome of the 2024 election could hinge on her ability to do so.
