Presidential historian Douglas Brinkley believes Vice President Kamala Harris will use her legal career to frame the 2024 presidential race against former President Trump as a battle between a "prosecutor" and a "felon."
Political pundits are speculating about the upcoming 2024 presidential race, with a focus on Vice President Kamala Harris's campaign strategy. Presidential historian Douglas Brinkley recently predicted that Harris will leverage her legal background to position the race against former President Trump as a contest between a "prosecutor" and a "felon."
Brinkley's comments came in the wake of President Biden's announcement that he would not seek re-election and his endorsement of Harris as the Democratic nominee. According to Brinkley, Harris's campaign will capitalize on her reputation as a prosecutor to cast Trump as a lawbreaker.

"People will remember that Biden at the very end here, did the right thing getting out… it is a grueling campaign trail. It's just grueling. There was no way President Joe Biden could do seven speeches a day," Brinkley said. "This was not going to be staying in the White House or Camp David or Rehoboth. You can’t do a lockdown… you can't run like that. In the end, you did need somebody with more vigor and energy and Vice President Harris has shown that."
Brinkley further emphasized Harris's diplomatic experience, noting that she has visited 21 countries abroad. He believes that this will enhance her appeal to voters who are unfamiliar with her. However, he acknowledged that she will need to overcome her lack of name recognition among the American public.

"Not just here at home, but she has been to 21 countries abroad and yet she is not known by a lot of Americans so there will be a new excitement of this notion of the prosecutor going against the felon," Brinkley said. "That is how the Harris-Biden team are going to position her and then on CBS News, you will be showing a lot of the clips of Senator Harris when she went after Kavanaugh and then after the bar on women's reproductive rights…it is the forte of Kamala Harris."
Harris has faced criticism for her record as a prosecutor and attorney general of California during her previous presidential bid. In 2024, she will face a tough battle against Trump, who was recently found guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records.

Brinkley's analysis aligns with the observations of Democratic strategists, who believe that Harris is well-positioned to challenge Trump. They point to her support among primary voters who backed Biden in 2020 and her already established campaign infrastructure.
Harris has received endorsements from former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, as well as several Democratic lawmakers. However, former President Obama has refrained from endorsing her, raising questions about her ability to unite the Democratic party.
The 2024 presidential race is expected to be highly competitive, with Harris and Trump emerging as the front-runners. Harris's legal background and prosecutorial experience could become a key differentiator in her campaign, as she seeks to position the race as a battle between a law-abiding citizen and a convicted felon.
