Vice President Kamala Harris's 2019 social media post calling Jussie Smollett a victim of an attempted "modern-day lynching" remains online despite the actor's conviction for staging a hate crime. Experts warn of the dangers of rushing to judgment in high-profile legal cases, particularly when mixed with politics.
Vice President Kamala Harris's swift condemnation of the Jussie Smollett hate crime hoax has come under scrutiny in light of the actor's subsequent conviction. Harris's initial reaction, posted on social media in 2019, echoed the false claims made by Smollett and raised concerns about the politicization of such sensitive issues.
In the wake of the hoax, Harris expressed disappointment in Smollett's actions. However, her initial response drew criticism for its rush to judgment, which experts say can undermine the integrity of the justice system.

"It's one thing to express your support for a friend. It's another thing to use your platform as a government official to prejudge a case before it's played out," said Eugene Roy, a retired Chicago Police Department chief of detectives.
Roy, who appeared in the Fox Nation documentary "Jussie Smollett: Anatomy of a Hoax," emphasized that public figures should exercise caution in their reactions to high-profile legal cases.

"People see who has made hasty judgments about controversial issues and, hopefully, they keep that in mind when they evaluate the merits of the candidates," Roy said.
Harris's campaign and White House office did not respond to requests for comment on the matter.

The Smollett case, which involved the actor staging a fake racist and homophobic attack, highlighted the dangers of rushing to judgment. Prosecutors presented evidence that Smollett recruited two brothers, Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo, to help him stage the hoax.
Phone records, ride-share records, video surveillance footage, GPS evidence, text messages, and social media messages between Smollett and the Osundairo brothers corroborated their testimony that the incident was staged. A jury found Smollett guilty on five of six charges of disorderly conduct after a nearly two-week trial in 2021.

Smollett has appealed his conviction to the Illinois Supreme Court, which agreed to hear his case in March. His legal team repeated arguments from previous appeals, claiming that his 2021 trial violated his Fifth Amendment protections against double jeopardy and that he had already performed community service as part of a 2019 deal with the Cook County State's Attorney's Office.
Harris was not the only Democrat duped by Smollett's phony story. President Biden also issued a tweet condemning the purported hate crime.

"What happened today to @JussieSmollett must never be tolerated in this country," Biden wrote on Twitter in 2019. "We must stand up and demand that we no longer give this hate safe harbor; that homophobia and racism have no place on our streets or in our hearts. We are with you, Jussie."
Roy expressed concern that society places more importance on "a quick sound bite" than "thorough, impartial investigation." He said that off-the-cuff reactions to high-profile legal cases can "cast a shadow" over public perception of the justice system.
"Again, as a government official, you can express support for your friends and supporters, but you should do it in a judicious and appropriate manner that doesn't call into question the integrity of the judicial process," Roy said.
The Smollett case serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of rushing to judgment in high-profile legal cases, particularly when mixed with politics. Experts emphasize the importance of thorough investigations and impartial evaluations to maintain the integrity of the justice system.
