Vice President Kamala Harris's first solo interview since becoming the presumptive Democratic nominee has raised eyebrows, with critics accusing her of evading tough questions and continuing a pattern of avoiding press conferences.
Vice President Kamala Harris's first solo interview since becoming the presumptive Democratic nominee has drawn criticism for her evasive answers and continued avoidance of formal press conferences.
Harris, who has been under pressure to hold a substantive interview after weeks of stonewalling, finally ended her drought last month in Georgia during a pre-taped piece with CNN's Dana Bash. However, the interview fell short of a traditional press conference, where reporters can ask follow-up questions and scrutinize the candidate's statements.

Since then, Harris has given one solo television interview and two taped radio interviews, but has yet to hold a formal press conference. In her first solo television interview, Harris's response to a question about her economic policy drew criticism for being vague and lacking specifics. When asked how she would lower prices, Harris cited her middle-class upbringing and spoke about the importance of investing in people's ambitions and aspirations.
Critics slammed Harris's answer as evasive and failing to address the specific question. They also noted that Harris's avoidance of formal press conferences is a departure from the norms of presidential candidates. In contrast, her opponent, former President Donald Trump, has held several lengthy interviews and three news conferences in recent weeks.

Conservative Radio Libre host Jorge Bonilla believes Harris's reluctance to hold press conferences is deliberate and part of a strategy to avoid accountability. "She is highly unlikely to do a press conference because the media have enabled and encouraged her 'plexiglass basement' strategy, wherein she preserves the illusion of being out there while remaining wholly inaccessible to the press and therefore unaccountable," Bonilla told Fox News Digital.
Trump has repeatedly highlighted the contrast in media availability between himself and Harris, accusing her of hiding from the press. In her interview on Friday in Philadelphia, Harris's answer citing her middle-class upbringing when asked about specifics of her economic policy drew sharp criticism.

"You know, I grew up in a neighborhood of folks who were very proud of their lawn," she said. "And I was raised to believe and to know that all people deserve dignity, and that we as Americans have a beautiful character. You know, we have ambitions and aspirations and dreams, but not everyone necessarily has access to the resources that can help them fuel those dreams and ambitions."
"So when I talk about building an opportunity economy, it is very much with the mind of investing in the ambitions and aspirations and the incredible work ethic of the American people and creating opportunity for people, for example, to start a small business."
Critics said Harris's answer was too vague and failed to address the specific question about her economic policy. They also accused her of using emotional language to avoid providing details.
Harris's continued avoidance of formal press conferences and her evasive answers in interviews have raised concerns about her transparency and accountability. As the presumptive Democratic nominee, Harris is expected to face tough questions from the press and provide detailed answers about her policies and positions. Her failure to do so is likely to further erode public trust in her candidacy.
