Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has remained steadfast in his beliefs, despite facing criticism for his comments on abortion and the LGBTQ community.
Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has been at the center of a heated debate since delivering a controversial speech at his college commencement ceremony. In the address, Butker condemned abortion, criticized the LGBTQ community, and urged women to embrace traditional gender roles.
Despite facing backlash, Butker has remained unyielding in his beliefs. During an appearance at the "Courage Under Fire Gala" in Nashville, the NFL star doubled down on his comments and defended his right to express his faith.
"I understand that I have become a more polarizing figure the more I have spoken out about my beliefs," Butker said. "But I will never care what people think of me."
Butker emphasized that his motivation for speaking out stems from his desire to glorify God, not seek approval from others. "Our love for Jesus, and thus, our desire to speak out, should never be outweighed by the longing of our fallen nature to be loved by the world," he stated.
The Chiefs kicker expressed humility at the support he has received, but acknowledged that the backlash has been significant. Nonetheless, he remains steadfast in his faith, finding inspiration in the sacrifices made by saints throughout history.
"If I constantly remind myself of the hardships the saints went through, especially the martyrs in their persecution, it makes it all seem not so bad," Butker said. "For if Heaven is our goal, we should embrace our cross, however large or small it may be, and live our life with joy to be a bold witness to Christ."
Butker's speech has sparked a national conversation about the role of faith in public discourse. While some have applauded his courage, others have condemned his views. However, the NFL star remains resolute in his conviction that it is his duty to speak out for his beliefs, even if it means facing criticism.
"My hope is tonight's theme and RCA's mission will embolden others that many more will be unapologetic of their Catholic faith and never be afraid to speak out for truth, even when it goes against the loudest voices," Butker said.
Butker's jersey sales have skyrocketed since his speech, indicating a growing support among fans who share his beliefs. The debate over his comments is likely to continue, but Butker has made it clear that he will not be deterred from expressing his views, regardless of the consequences.
