Kelly Stafford, wife of Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, has apologized for her comments about dating another Georgia quarterback to make him jealous, as the revelation led to a media frenzy surrounding the backup quarterback and his family.
Kelly Stafford's recent revelation that she dated Matthew Stafford's backup quarterback at Georgia in an attempt to make him jealous has sparked a media firestorm, prompting Stafford to issue an apology for the unintended consequences.
Mrs. Stafford, in an interview last week, disclosed her past relationship with an unnamed backup quarterback during Stafford's tenure at Georgia (2006 to 2008), a move aimed at eliciting a response from her future husband.

"I dated the backup to p--- him off, which worked — he was the bad boy too," Stafford said. "Matthew’s so sweet and a Southern gentleman and all that stuff. And the backup was the complete opposite, and it upset him."
The comments ignited widespread headlines, much to Mrs. Stafford's surprise. However, it was the subsequent speculation and scrutiny focused on the unidentified quarterback, Joe Cox, and his family that prompted her apology.

Stafford clarified that Cox had no involvement in her past relationship and expressed regret for the unwarranted attention his family faced.
"To this beautiful fam…I am sorry for the media storm that happened last week that made its way into your lives. You had ZERO involvement in what I spoke about and in fact, it was y’alls relationship in college that I looked up to and wanted for me and Matthew," Stafford wrote in a public apology.

She lauded the Cox family as a model for the relationship she aspired to with Matthew and emphasized that they were victims of circumstance.
"You were the couple that everyone thinks Matthew and I was.. y’all were the UGA QB and cheerleader that met and never let go. I love y’all."
During her interview, Mrs. Stafford had also revealed that the backup quarterback was a roommate of Stafford's.
"They lived in the same dorm room because athletes lived in the same dorm room. He would see my car there. At one point he waited and followed me into the car. I was like, ‘This is amazing. It’s working.’ I was like, ‘Get out of my car.’ He was like, ‘He’s not right for you.’ I was like, ‘What? You can’t tell me that,'" she said.
The Staffords, who got married in 2015, have four daughters and are widely regarded as one of the NFL's most prominent couples. Their marriage has been built on a strong foundation of trust, resilience, and a shared commitment to family.
Kelly Stafford's recent comments, while intended as a lighthearted anecdote, ignited a social media firestorm that ultimately required her to issue a public apology. The incident serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of sharing personal details, even when they are seemingly innocuous.
