Mystik Dan, the Kentucky Derby winner, will race in the Preakness Stakes next weekend, keeping alive the possibility of a Triple Crown winner. Here's everything you need to know.
Mystik Dan, the triumphant winner of the 150th Kentucky Derby, is set to embark on his quest for the coveted Triple Crown at the Preakness Stakes next weekend. Trainer Kenny McPeek confirmed the news on Saturday, stating that the three-year-old colt remains in excellent condition and is eager to compete in the second leg of the Triple Crown.
McPeek's announcement comes a week ahead of the 149th running of the Preakness Stakes, which will take place at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore on May 18th. The decision to enter Mystik Dan into the race was made after careful consideration by McPeek and the colt's owners, Lance Gasaway, Daniel Hamby, Brent Gasaway, and Scot Hamby.
"Mystik Dan is well and acts like he'll be ready to run in the Preakness. I've discussed the decision with the owners, and we plan to run May 18th," McPeek said in a statement.
Mystik Dan's impressive performance at the Kentucky Derby has fueled anticipation for his participation in the Preakness Stakes. The colt secured victory in a thrilling photo-finish, edging out his rivals by a nose—a testament to his determination and athleticism. McPeek acknowledged the exceptional ride by jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. and thanked him for his contribution to Mystik Dan's triumph.
"He didn't win the Derby without the job Brian did. I'm thrilled Brian is finally getting the credit he deserves," McPeek said.
Hernandez Jr. will once again don the saddle for Mystik Dan in the Preakness Stakes. McPeek emphasized the jockey's vital role in the colt's success, highlighting his expertise and ability to guide Mystik Dan to victory.
The Preakness Stakes presents a significant challenge for Mystik Dan as he seeks to extend his winning streak. The race is renowned for its demanding conditions and shorter distance compared to the Kentucky Derby. However, McPeek expressed confidence in Mystik Dan's capabilities and believes he has the potential to emerge victorious.
"The colt's had a good week. He will travel to Baltimore Sunday," McPeek said. "I'm looking for another big effort from him. He's a very talented horse, and I think he can get the job done."
Mystik Dan's journey towards the Triple Crown has captured the attention of horse racing enthusiasts and sports fans alike. If he manages to conquer the Preakness Stakes, he will have a golden opportunity to etch his name in history as the 14th Triple Crown winner.
The last horse to achieve this incredible feat was Justify in 2018, trained by Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert. The Preakness Stakes will undoubtedly test Mystik Dan's limits, but his determination, coupled with McPeek's guidance and Hernandez Jr.'s expertise, gives him a formidable chance of securing a historic victory.
