Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr, whose father was assassinated in 1984, condemned the attempted shooting of former President Trump as "a demoralizing day for our country." He called for greater civility and gun control in the wake of the incident.

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has expressed deep dismay over the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, labeling it "a demoralizing day for our country."

Kerr, who is also leading the United States men's Olympic basketball team in Abu Dhabi, conveyed his thoughts on the shooting while speaking to reporters. He emphasized the responsibility of representing the nation with pride and respect, particularly in the wake of such a disturbing event.

"We've talked to the players about how important it is to show the best version of us as human beings to represent our country in a respectful, dignified manner," Kerr said. "It makes you want to do that even more so, because this is really shameful for us to sit here and think about what happened and what's going on in our country."

Kerr's father, Malcolm, was assassinated in Beirut in 1984, a tragedy that has fueled his advocacy for gun control. He has consistently criticized Trump's policies and rhetoric, which he believes have contributed to the nation's political divide.

According to Trump, a bullet struck his right ear during the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Videos captured the sound of gunshots and Trump clutching his ear as Secret Service agents swiftly tackled him.

Secret Service personnel reportedly returned fire, killing the suspected assassin, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. Additionally, one rally attendee was fatally injured, while two others sustained injuries.

"It's such a demoralizing day for our country, and it's yet another example of not only our political division but also gun culture," Kerr said. "A 20-year-old with an AR-15 trying to shoot the former president. It's hard to process everything, and it's scary to think about where this goes because of the issues that already exist in the country. So, this is a terrible day."

Despite the incident, Trump has declared that he will proceed with his planned trip to Milwaukee for the start of the Republican National Convention.

Kerr's condemnation of the shooting has been echoed by other prominent figures in professional basketball. Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, who has clashed with Trump in the past, expressed his support for the former president.

"I don't care about politics," James said. "When it comes to humanity and a human being being harmed, as far as being attacked, I believe everyone should have the right to live and be protected. I hope he's okay."

The attempted assassination of Trump has heightened concerns about political violence in the United States. Critics have accused Trump and his supporters of encouraging division and inciting violence.

Enes Kanter Freedom, a former NBA player known for his vocal criticism of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, has argued that Trump's rhetoric has created a climate of fear and intimidation.

"It's a very dangerous situation," Kanter Freedom said. "Trump has been using this language for a long time. He has been saying, 'I love my supporters. They will do anything for me.' And that's what we're seeing now."

The incident has sparked renewed calls for measures to address gun violence in the United States. Kerr, a staunch advocate for gun control, has urged lawmakers to enact stricter regulations.

"We need common-sense gun laws," Kerr said. "We need background checks. We need to close the gun show loophole. We need to ban assault weapons. We need to do all these things that we know will save lives. And we're not doing it."

The attempted assassination of Trump and the ongoing debate over gun control highlight the deep divisions that plague American society. It is crucial for all citizens to engage in respectful dialogue and work towards a more unified and peaceful future for the nation.
