Kevin Costner recently opened up about his emotional experience filming with his 15-year-old son, Hayes, in his new film "Horizon," while facing legal proceedings over child support payments.

Hollywood star Kevin Costner has shared a heartwarming account of his time filming with his son, Hayes, in his latest film "Horizon," amidst a child support battle with his ex-wife, Christine Baumgartner.

Costner spoke exclusively to Fox News Digital about his poignant experience working alongside his son, who played a small role in the Civil War-era Western.

"He's a beautiful boy, and he's quiet," Costner said during an appearance on "Today." "And I have not shoved my children into the business. I realize there are so many young actors out there that would just kill to be in this movie. And I don't want to take those parts away from them just cause I can place my own children in."

Despite the abundance of talented young actors, Costner admitted to selfishly casting Hayes in "Horizon" to spend quality time with him during filming.

"But, in a sense, it was a smaller part," Costner explained. "I selfishly wanted him with me for the week, two weeks, he was with me. And we would drive to the set every day and he would whisper. He didn't have a lot of experience, but he's really beautiful in the movie."

Hayes' role required only around two weeks of filming, a sacrifice Costner was willing to make to create memories with his son.

"It's a really complicated scene," he added.

Costner's decision to prioritize his son's experience on set came amidst a legal battle over child support payments with Baumgartner. In September, Costner won the court ruling, but the proceedings shed light on the actor's concerns about his role in the popular television series "Yellowstone."

Costner revealed that his departure from "Yellowstone" stemmed from scheduling conflicts and creative differences with the producers.

"Number one, I did it for five years, okay? And I want to work more than once a year," Costner explained to Savannah Guthrie. "And we lost an entire year at one point, and I thought, 'well, that can't ever happen again.' It was well over a year, and I said well ... I just have to be in position to make the things."

Despite his departure from "Yellowstone," Costner hinted at a possible return to the show if the circumstances align.

"There's always a chance," Costner said. "It's been really important to me... I would love to go back under the right circumstances – I think that all of us want ... at this point. For me, it really needs to be the right circumstances."

Fox News Digital was present in the courtroom where Costner discussed the potential legal battle over unpaid money from his time on "Yellowstone."

"Somewhere along the line they wanted to change things," he said of the "Yellowstone" filming process. "They wanted to do 5A and 5B… affected ‘Horizon.’ I was going to do my movie ‘Horizon’ and leave that show, do my movie, then do B. A show I was only doing once a year I was now doing twice."
