King Charles III has expressed regret over his son Prince Harry's upbringing, according to a new book by Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine. The book, titled "My Mother and I," details the monarch's own upbringing and his relationship with Queen Elizabeth II.
Seward writes that Charles believes he made mistakes in raising Harry, particularly in not providing him with enough support after the death of Princess Diana in 1997. Charles was 49 years old when Diana died, and Harry was just 12.
"Charles has always regretted not being there for Harry more after Diana's death," Seward writes. "He knows he made mistakes, and he's said he wishes he could have done things differently."
Charles's regret is compounded by the fact that he has a close relationship with his eldest son, Prince William. William is seen as the future king, and Charles is said to be very proud of him.
"Charles is very close to William," Seward writes. "They have a lot in common, and they share a love of the outdoors and the military. Charles is very proud of William, and he sees him as a worthy successor."
In contrast, Charles's relationship with Harry has been strained in recent years. Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, stepped down as senior royals in 2020 and moved to California. They have since criticized the royal family in a series of interviews, and Harry has accused Charles of cutting him off financially.
Charles has been hurt by Harry's comments, and he is said to be concerned about the damage they are doing to the monarchy. However, he still loves Harry and hopes to mend their relationship.
"Charles is a loving father," Seward writes. "He loves both of his sons, and he wants them to be happy. He hopes that one day he and Harry can put their differences aside and rebuild their relationship."
The book "My Mother and I" is scheduled to be released on June 29, 2023.
