Kristen Stewart has raised her voice against Hollywood's inadequate representation of women filmmakers, calling it a "phony" facade. In an interview with Porter Magazine, the actress expressed her frustration with the industry's supposed efforts to promote diversity and inclusion, which she believes fall short of genuine change.

Stewart's criticism stems from the limited opportunities available to female filmmakers in comparison to their male counterparts. She pointed out that while high-profile actresses like Maggie Gyllenhaal and Margot Robbie receive recognition for their work, it remains a rare occurrence.

"It's easy for them to be like, 'Look what we're doing. We're making Maggie Gyllenhaal's movie! We're making Margot Robbie's movie!' And you're like, 'OK, cool. You've chosen four,'" Stewart said.

She questioned the sincerity of industry leaders who claim to be pushing for change while failing to provide meaningful support for a wider range of female voices. "If we're congratulating each other for broadening perspective, when we haven't really done enough, then we stop broadening," she stated.

Stewart's call for more substantial representation goes beyond mere tokenism. She believes that the industry needs to acknowledge the complex experiences and perspectives of women in a way that goes beyond superficial gestures.

"Even if we're still emotionally violent towards women right now, it's so much more passive aggressive... [Before] it was just so f---ing straight up," she said.

The Oscar-nominated actress also addressed her decision to pursue directing, a role that allows her to contribute to the change she wants to see. "As an actor, I'm called upon to serve other people's visions... I think it's nice that, as I've gotten older, I would much prefer to tailor my experiences to result-oriented goals, versus, just, 'This is gonna feel good for me right now,'" she explained.

Stewart's upcoming directorial debut, an adaptation of the memoir "The Chronology of Water," explores challenging themes such as incest and menstruation. Despite its intense subject matter, she believes it offers a thrilling and thought-provoking experience.

"My movie is about incest and periods and a woman violently repossessing her voice and body, and it is, at times, hard to watch ... but it's gonna be a f---ing thrill ride," she said. "I think that's commercial, but I don't think that I have any gauge on what that means."

Stewart's outspoken criticism highlights the ongoing need for greater diversity and inclusion in Hollywood. Her demand for more opportunities and authentic representation will hopefully inspire the industry to take real steps towards a more equitable future.
