Kyle Larson has become the first driver to qualify for the prestigious 2024 Indianapolis 500 after a thrilling session on Friday. The remainder of the field will be determined in the remaining two qualifying sessions over the weekend.
Kyle Larson has taken the first step towards a potentially historic double by securing a spot in the 2024 Indianapolis 500.
The NASCAR Cup Series champion made a flying start on Friday, posting an average speed of 231.669 mph in the Team Hendrick No. 5 Chevrolet to top the timesheets.
With his victory lane celebration still fresh in the rearview mirror after last weekend's Daytona 500 triumph, Larson's blistering pace showcased his versatility as he attempts to become just the second driver in history to win both the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR Cup Series championship in the same year.
But while Larson has taken the early lead, the race for the remaining qualifying spots is set to intensify over the next two days.
Positions 13-30 will be determined during Saturday's qualifying session, giving drivers another opportunity to showcase their speed and earn a place in the race.
The top 12 spots and positions 31-33 will be determined on Sunday in an equally competitive session.
Larson's Team Hendrick teammate Alex Bowman also impressed on Friday, qualifying in second position with an average speed of 231.460 mph.
He will be joined in the top five by Josef Newgarden, Will Power, and Pato O'Ward, who all posted impressive times to secure their spots in the upper echelon of the grid.
However, one driver will ultimately fail to make it into the race, adding an extra layer of drama to the weekend.
With a thrilling Saturday and Sunday ahead, the 2024 Indianapolis 500 is shaping up to be an unforgettable spectacle as the world's best drivers battle for a place in racing history.
