After a challenging Memorial Day weekend, Kyle Larson's fortune shifted at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, earning him the Brickyard 400 victory.
INDIANAPOLIS — Kyle Larson, who faced misfortune during Memorial Day weekend's Indy 500-Coke 600 double, turned his luck around on Sunday at the Brickyard 400. Despite missing the Indy 500 start due to rain and encountering a rain-shortened race in Charlotte, Larson's luck held at Indianapolis, providing him with the necessary cautions.
On an overtime restart, leader Brad Keselowski's car ran out of fuel, allowing Larson, who was in third, to take the optimal inside lane and overtake Ryan Blaney for the lead. "Everything just comes full circle," Larson remarked. "Everything is meant to be. Today definitely [was] meant to be for us."
Larson's Luck Turns at Brickyard 400
Larson's victory marked the 30th anniversary of Hendrick Motorsports driver Jeff Gordon's inaugural Cup race win at Indianapolis. Rick Hendrick, current owner of Hendrick Motorsports, expressed his excitement, saying, "I don't know that I've ever been this excited."
Tyler Reddick finished in second place, followed by Blaney, Christopher Bell, and Bubba Wallace. Wallace's fifth-place finish closed the gap between him and Ross Chastain for the final playoff spot to just seven points. With four races remaining in the regular season, a maximum of four winless drivers will make the playoffs.
Despite the excitement of the race, accidents plagued several drivers, with 11 of 39 cars failing to complete the race. Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano, Jimmie Johnson, and William Byron were among those affected. Hamlin blamed a spinning Kyle Busch, while Logano was caught off guard by Johnson's spin. Byron accused Chase Briscoe of making reckless moves that led to their incident.
In summary, Kyle Larson's luck turned in his favor at the Brickyard 400, leading him to victory after a challenging Memorial Day weekend. The race also highlighted the intense competition at Indy, with numerous wrecks affecting the outcome.
