A 13-year-old Florida boy has been arrested and charged with a felony for pointing a laser at a sheriff's office helicopter.
According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred on Saturday evening when the boy pointed a laser at a helicopter that was flying over his neighborhood. The laser beam struck the helicopter's cockpit, temporarily blinding the pilot and causing him to lose control of the aircraft.
The pilot was able to regain control of the helicopter and land it safely. He was not injured in the incident.
The boy was arrested and charged with a felony count of pointing a laser at an aircraft. He was taken to the Pinellas County Juvenile Assessment Center.
Pointing a laser at an aircraft is a federal crime. It can be punished by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has warned that pointing a laser at an aircraft is extremely dangerous. The FAA says that lasers can distract pilots and cause them to lose control of their aircraft.
The FAA also notes that lasers can damage the eyes of pilots and other people who are exposed to them.
The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office is asking parents to talk to their children about the dangers of pointing lasers at aircraft. The sheriff's office also says that it will continue to investigate laser-pointing incidents and will prosecute those who are responsible.
