A mother is pursuing legal action against NBA star LaMelo Ball and the Charlotte Hornets after her 11-year-old son allegedly suffered a foot injury during an incident at the team's arena.

Tamaria McRae, the mother of the 11-year-old boy, claims that the incident occurred on October 7, 2023, during the Hornets' "Purple and Teal Day" event at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. According to McRae, her son was among the fans gathered outside the arena as players were leaving when he approached Ball, his favorite player, for an autograph.

McRae alleges that Ball drove over her son's foot as he drove away, causing a broken foot that took months to heal. She claims that the police report did not include Ball's name or insurance details, leaving the family with no recourse but to file a lawsuit.

The lawsuit also names the Hornets organization, arguing that they failed to provide adequate security measures to protect fans, such as barricades or designated autograph lines. The family's attorney, Cameron DeBrun, stated that "we only have one recourse and that's the court system."

The Hornets have not yet publicly commented on the lawsuit. Ball, who has not publicly addressed the matter, has been a key player for the Hornets since joining the team in 2020. He was named an NBA All-Star in 2022.

The incident has raised questions about the safety of fan interactions with professional athletes. Some have argued that players should be more cautious when interacting with fans, while others have suggested that fans need to be more respectful of players' personal space.

Fan safety has been a growing concern in recent years, with several incidents of fans being injured or harassed at sporting events. In 2022, a fan was struck by a foul ball at a Major League Baseball game, resulting in a serious head injury.

The lawsuit against Ball and the Hornets is a reminder of the potential dangers of fan interactions and the importance of both sides taking precautions to ensure safety. It remains to be seen how the case will unfold, but it will likely have implications for the way professional athletes interact with their fans in the future.
