NBA superstar LeBron James has come to the defense of WNBA top pick Caitlin Clark, who has faced scrutiny after a rough start with the Indiana Fever. James believes Clark's presence will significantly benefit the league's growth potential.
Greatness recognizes greatness, and LeBron James sees the remarkable talent in Caitlin Clark, the first overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft. James believes Clark's arrival will have a transformative impact on the league's popularity and potential growth.
The Los Angeles Lakers star has addressed the criticism surrounding Clark, who has faced scrutiny after the Indiana Fever's 0-4 start to the season.
"People need to realize, the Indiana Fever — this is the second year in a row they had the No. 1 pick," James said on his podcast "Mind the Game" with J.J. Redick. "Do y'all know what that means? That means they're not that good."
"I'm rooting for Caitlin because I've been in that seat before. I walked that road before. I hope she kills it. I hope Aliyah Boston does amazing. I hope they do great."
James emphasizes that the Fever's struggles are not solely due to Clark's performance. He acknowledges the team's rebuilding process, having acquired the top pick for the second consecutive year.
Drawing parallels with his own experiences as a rookie and the current situation surrounding his son, Bronny James, the projected No. 1 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, James understands the pressure and expectations young players face.
"I'm getting the same thing from watching my son, who is a 19-year-old, getting a lot of animosity and hatred towards him when he's just a kid trying to live out his dream. There's a very small number of men and women that actually get to live out their dream of playing the professional sport, and we have grown a-- men and women out here doing whatever they can to make sure that doesn't happen."
James applauds Clark's resilience and determination amidst the criticism. He believes she has the potential to inspire a new generation of fans and elevate the WNBA to new heights.
"The one thing that I love that she's bringing to her sport: more people want to watch. More people want to tune in. I saw, for the first time, they had a chartered plane. For the first time in their league history, they flew private. That should be celebrated in its own right," he said.
"That should be celebrated, and it's because of Caitlin Clark. Don't get it twisted. Don't get it f---ed up. Caitlin Clark is the reason why a lot of great things are going to happen for the WNBA."
Clark's impact has already been evident in the increased viewership of both collegiate and professional women's basketball. Her arrival has generated excitement and intrigue within the league.
The WNBA has invested heavily in improving player travel conditions, recognizing the value of Clark's presence and the need to enhance the league's overall experience. This commitment will further elevate the WNBA's profile and contribute to its continued growth.
