Despite a tumultuous 2023 season, the Los Angeles Chargers have made it clear that quarterback Justin Herbert is not available for trade, rejecting inquiries from other teams, including the New England Patriots and Minnesota Vikings.
The Los Angeles Chargers have endured a tumultuous period in recent months, culminating in a disappointing 5-11 season, a coaching change, and the departures of key players like Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, and Austin Ekeler. Amidst these challenges, however, the Chargers have remained steadfast in their commitment to quarterback Justin Herbert.
Despite reports of trade inquiries from the New England Patriots and Minnesota Vikings, Chargers general manager Joe Horitz has unequivocally dismissed the possibility of moving Herbert. "No. No, at the combine I had some people ask me would we consider it, and they were quickly shot down. No, that is never an option," Horitz stated.
Herbert's value to the Chargers is undeniable. Since being selected with the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, he has emerged as one of the league's brightest young stars. In 13 games last season, he amassed 3,134 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, and seven interceptions, despite playing on a struggling team.
Prior to the 2023 season, Herbert inked a lucrative contract extension worth over $260 million, signifying the Chargers' long-term commitment to his services. The team is confident that Herbert can lead them to future success, despite the recent setbacks.
The Chargers have made some moves to support Herbert in the 2023 season. In the second round of the NFL Draft, they selected Georgia wide receiver Ladd McConkey, adding a talented pass-catcher to their offense. They also have Quentin Johnston, last year's first-round pick, who is expected to play a significant role this season.
With a new head coach in Jim Harbaugh and a restructured offense, the Chargers are looking to turn things around in 2023. Herbert will be at the helm of this rebuild, and the Chargers are determined to provide him with the necessary support to succeed.
The team's commitment to Herbert stems from his exceptional talent and leadership abilities. He has a strong arm, excellent accuracy, and the ability to make plays outside the pocket. Off the field, Herbert is a respected and admired figure within the Chargers organization.
While the Chargers may have fallen short of expectations last season, the team is optimistic about the future with Herbert as their franchise quarterback. They believe he has the potential to be one of the best in the league and are determined to build a winning team around him.
The trade rumors surrounding Herbert may have cast some doubt on his future with the Chargers, but the team's unwavering commitment to him has put those rumors to rest. Herbert is the cornerstone of the Chargers' rebuilding efforts, and the team is confident that he will lead them to brighter days.
