Lowry shoots record-tying 62 to get in contention at PGA Championship

Shane Lowry shot a record-tying 62 in the second round of the PGA Championship on Friday to move into contention for his second major championship.

The Irishman, who won the Open Championship in 2019, birdied six of his first seven holes and added three more on the back nine to match the lowest round ever recorded in a major championship.

Lowry's 62 was one stroke off the course record at Southern Hills Country Club, which was set by Justin Thomas in the first round.

The 35-year-old Lowry is now tied for third place, three strokes behind leader Mito Pereira of Chile.

Lowry said he was "over the moon" with his round, which he attributed to his putting.

"I made a few putts early on, which settled me down," Lowry said. "And then I just kept hitting good shots and giving myself chances. It was a great day."

Lowry's playing partner, Rory McIlroy, also shot a 62 on Friday. It was McIlroy's lowest round in a major championship since he won the 2014 PGA Championship.

McIlroy is now tied for sixth place, four strokes behind Pereira.

Lowry and McIlroy are the only two players to shoot in the 60s in both rounds of the PGA Championship so far.

The third round of the PGA Championship will be played on Saturday.
