Devin Daniels, the outstanding LSU Tigers quarterback and 2023 Heisman Trophy winner, has emerged as the overwhelming favorite to be selected second overall by the Washington Commanders in the upcoming NFL Draft. Daniels' odds have skyrocketed in recent days, leaving Drake Maye as a distant second favorite.
The NFL Draft is fast approaching, and the excitement surrounding the potential landing spots for the top prospects is palpable. Among the most anticipated selections is the second overall pick, currently held by the Washington Commanders. In recent weeks, the odds of former LSU Tigers star Devin Daniels being selected at No. 2 have undergone a significant shift.
Just a few days ago, Daniels' odds to go second sat at a modest -120. However, a surge of activity from bettors has propelled him to the top of the list, with his odds now resting at a commanding -400. This meteoric rise has displaced Drake Maye, the former North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback, who previously held the position of favorite. Maye's odds have now slipped to +330, reflecting his diminished chances of being selected second.
The surge in support for Daniels can be attributed to his exceptional performance at LSU, where he led the Tigers to an impressive 12-1 record and an appearance in the College Football Playoff. Daniels' stellar statistics, including 3,923 passing yards, 44 touchdowns, and only 5 interceptions, have solidified his status as one of the most talented passers in the nation.
Experts in the field have weighed in on Daniels' rising stock. Former NFL quarterback Matt Leinart believes that Daniels possesses the necessary skills to become a successful NFL player. "He has all the tools," said Leinart. "He can make all the throws, he's athletic, and he has a strong arm."
Daniels' athleticism and mobility have also drawn comparisons to another former LSU quarterback, Joe Burrow, who was selected first overall by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2020 NFL Draft. Burrow's ability to extend plays and make throws on the run has been a key factor in his success at the NFL level.
The Washington Commanders are in need of a franchise quarterback, and Daniels fits the bill perfectly. His ability to lead an offense, make big plays, and escape pressure would be a welcome addition to the Commanders' struggling offense.
With the NFL Draft less than a month away, the Commanders hold the keys to Daniels' future. If they do indeed select him with the second overall pick, they will be betting on his potential to become the face of their franchise for years to come.
