In a candid interview, country music star Luke Combs reveals the agonizing sacrifice he had to make for his career: missing the birth of his second son. Despite the immense success he enjoys, Combs explains how this decision left him emotionally shattered.

Luke Combs is known for his heart-wrenching melodies and captivating performances, but few know the personal sacrifices he's made to achieve his dreams. In a raw and emotional interview on "The Zane Lowe Show," Combs opened up about the "worst day" of his life: the day he learned he would miss the birth of his son.

"I'll never forget the craziest day, probably, in my life ... close to it," Combs recalled. "One of the best and one of the worst days in my life at the same time was, interestingly enough, and it's so hard to wrap my mind around it."

Combs was on tour in Australia when he received a text message from his wife, Nicole, that shook him to his core. "I'm so sorry, I really tried to not have the baby while you're gone," she wrote.

"And God, dude, it sucked," Combs said, his voice thick with emotion.

Despite his absence, Combs was able to witness the birth of his second son, Beau Lee, virtually. "I got to see him be born, which was awesome. He wasn't born yet, but my wife went, she texted me on the way to the hospital, and he was two and a half weeks early, and I was supposed to be home and I wasn't," Combs said.

The realization that he was thousands of miles away from his family during such a significant moment weighed heavily on Combs. "And that was real hard to do, and I haven't really told anybody that," he admitted. "But I didn't cover that too much in this album because it's really hard for me to deal with."

Balancing his music career with his family life has been challenging for Combs, but he emphasizes his unwavering love for both. "It's not an easy balance, but it's something that I'm really striving to do right now, to figure this out and find the balance," he said.

Throughout his journey, Combs has been surrounded by a supportive network of friends and family. "God, it was a hard day, but I was so lucky that a lot of my closest friends now work for me. And so I had a really great support system," he said.

Combs' mother-in-law and sister-in-law played pivotal roles in assisting Nicole during her labor. "My mother-in-law came up for the month while I was gone, because, obviously, we have a 1-year-old and my wife is essentially nine months pregnant at the time, so thank goodness she was there," he said.

Despite the challenges, Combs remains grateful for the opportunity to provide for his family through his music. "I'm very thankful for the people that I do have around me that make it possible," he said.

Combs and Nicole welcomed their first son, Tex, in 2021. The couple has made a conscious effort to prioritize family time amidst Combs' hectic schedule. "I have kind of gone to the extreme where now I don't book anything on days that Tex or Beau are home from school," he said.

The decision to miss his son's birth was not an easy one for Combs, but he believes it was necessary for the long-term well-being of his family. "I love my job. I love my family. I would never do anything to jeopardize either of those," he said. "I miss my family when I'm away from them. My wife's my best friend," he added.

Through his journey, Combs has learned that success often comes with sacrifices. He encourages others facing similar challenges to embrace support systems and prioritize their relationships. "I think the people in your life that are really important to you and that you really care about and that really care about you, they want what's best for you," he said. "They're going to be there for you through thick and thin. And so, lean on those people."
