A Maine woman faces negligent manslaughter charges after allegedly shooting her boyfriend in the forehead during a prank that went wrong. A newly released doorbell camera video has emerged, capturing the horrifying aftermath of the shooting.
In a shocking turn of events, a Maine woman is facing charges of negligent manslaughter after a prank gone wrong resulted in the tragic death of her boyfriend. Olivia Babin, 20, is accused of shooting her 24-year-old boyfriend, Daniel Ford-Coates, in the forehead during an early morning incident last month.
According to authorities, the deadly incident unfolded at approximately 4:30 a.m. on April 2 in Bangor, Maine. The couple, along with a friend, had allegedly been consuming drugs and alcohol prior to the shooting.
Prosecutors allege that Babin retrieved her boyfriend's gun and removed the magazine, believing it to be unloaded. However, a round remained in the chamber, unknown to Babin. In what was intended to be a harmless prank, Babin allegedly pointed the gun at Ford-Coates' forehead and pulled the trigger.
Tragically, the gun fired, and Ford-Coates sustained a fatal point-blank gunshot wound to his forehead. Babin's actions were captured by a doorbell camera through an open window, revealing the horrifying aftermath of the shooting.
In the harrowing audio, Babin can be heard screaming at her mortally wounded boyfriend, "You're not dead!" as a witness exclaims, "Oh, f---." The video also shows Babin allegedly discarding the gun in a river and changing her clothes before calling 911.
When officers arrived at the scene, Babin reportedly provided them with a false account of the events. However, witnesses and the doorbell camera footage contradicted her story.
An autopsy conducted on Ford-Coates revealed contact burns on his skin, indicating that the gun was fired at close range. His death was ruled a homicide.
Babin has been charged with negligent manslaughter and is being held on $100,000 bail at the Penobscot County Jail. She is scheduled to appear in court on June 10. The tragic incident has left the community in shock and serves as a sobering reminder of the potential consequences of reckless behavior.
