A Dearborn Heights man has been charged with attempting to break into the home of his former coworker and ex-romantic interest after being caught with a backpack containing a loaded gun, knife, and other disturbing items.
A Michigan man is facing charges of attempted home invasion and felony firearm possession after allegedly breaking into the home of his former coworker and past romantic interest while carrying a backpack filled with concerning items.
Levi Trahern Smith, 34, of Dearborn Heights, was arraigned Tuesday on one count of first-degree attempted home invasion, a five-year felony, and one felony firearm violation, which carries a two-year sentence. His bond was set at $25,000, and his next court appearance is scheduled for June 14.
According to Oakland County prosecutors, the incident occurred around 1:20 a.m. on Saturday, June 1, when the victim, who remains unidentified, said she woke up to find Smith attempting to enter her home through a side door.
The victim immediately triggered her panic alarm and captured Smith on her Ring doorbell footage as he attempted to flee the scene. Police said they later located Smith, who was carrying a backpack containing a loaded handgun, a large knife, handcuffs, rope, masks, a hammer, a crowbar, duct tape, latex gloves, and other items.
"I am relieved that the victim was vigilant and contacted law enforcement immediately," stated Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald. "Without the victim's call to 911 and the work of the Royal Oak Police, this situation could have been far worse."
Royal Oak Police Chief Michael Moore said they were able to quickly locate and apprehend Smith. "The quick thinking of the victim to contact police once she realized this dangerous situation was unfolding prevented a much worse outcome," stated Chief Moore.
Police believe Smith specifically targeted the victim, whom he had once shown romantic interest in. The victim and Smith were former coworkers, according to officials. Investigators are encouraging anyone with additional information about Smith or this case to call the Royal Oak Police Department at 248-246-3519 or 248-246-3456.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of home security and being vigilant in your surroundings. If you ever feel unsafe or threatened, do not hesitate to contact law enforcement immediately.
