The Marlins have designated veteran shortstop and former AL batting champ Tim Anderson for assignment, opening up a spot on the roster for the newly acquired Miguel Rojas.
The Miami Marlins have designated veteran shortstop Tim Anderson for assignment, the team announced Tuesday. The move comes as the Marlins prepare to welcome newly acquired shortstop Miguel Rojas to the roster.
Anderson, 30, was acquired by the Marlins in a trade with the Chicago White Sox prior to the 2023 season. He was coming off a disappointing 2022 campaign in which he hit just .291 with 16 home runs and 69 RBIs.

Despite his struggles at the plate, Anderson is still a solid defender at shortstop. He has won two Gold Glove awards and is known for his quick reflexes and strong arm.
However, the Marlins have been looking to upgrade their shortstop position for some time. Rojas, who was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for infielder prospect Zach McCambley, is a two-time Gold Glove winner and is considered one of the best defensive shortstops in the league.
Rojas is also a solid hitter, with a career batting average of .270. He is expected to bat leadoff for the Marlins and provide a spark at the top of the lineup.
With Rojas now in the fold, Anderson becomes expendable. The Marlins have several other options at shortstop, including Jazz Chisholm Jr., who is expected to return from injury in the second half of the season.
Anderson is now free to sign with any other team. He is expected to draw interest from several contenders, including the New York Yankees, who are in need of a shortstop.
Anderson's departure marks the end of an era in Miami. He was a key member of the Marlins' 2020 World Series championship team and was a fan favorite.
However, the Marlins are now looking to the future, and Anderson no longer fits into their plans. With Rojas now in place, the Marlins believe they have the shortstop they need to compete for another World Series title.
Here are some additional details about the move:
* Anderson was designated for assignment, which means he has 10 days to be traded or released.
* If Anderson is not traded or released within 10 days, he will be placed on waivers.
* If Anderson clears waivers, he will become a free agent and can sign with any team.
* The Marlins are expected to recall infielder Isan Diaz from Triple-A to take Anderson's place on the roster.
