Tennis legend Martina Navratilova has sparked a controversy by lashing out at Italian sprinter Valentina Petrillo, who is set to become the first transgender woman to compete in the Paralympics. Navratilova has accused Petrillo of being a "pathetic cheater," arguing that her participation in the women's events is unfair.

Martina Navratilova, a vocal proponent of protecting women's rights in sports, has ignited a heated debate by denouncing Italian sprinter Valentina Petrillo as a "pathetic cheater" ahead of her historic Paralympic debut.

Petrillo, who identifies as a transgender woman, is poised to make history as the first trans athlete to compete at the Paralympic Games next week in Paris. She is slated to participate in the women's 200 and 400-meter races in the T12 classification for visually impaired athletes.

However, Navratilova has vehemently challenged Petrillo's participation, taking to social media to express her outrage. In a post on X, she labeled Petrillo a "pathetic cheater," accusing her of "stealing women's trophies."

"Yet another male stealing women's trophies. In [the] Paralympics, no less. Sickening," Navratilova wrote.

Petrillo, who is 50 years old, was diagnosed with Stargardt disease, a degenerative eye condition, as a teenager. She previously competed as a male, winning 11 national titles in the men's T12 category before transitioning.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Petrillo expressed her excitement about racing in the female category, stating, "I began transitioning in 2019 and in 2020 I realized my dream, which was to race in the female category, to do the sport that I had always loved doing."

Despite the controversy surrounding her participation, Petrillo has maintained her belief that she has the right to compete fairly. She told AP, "I have asked myself 'But Valentina, if you were a biological woman and you saw a Valentina racing with you, what would you think?' And I responded to myself that I would also have some doubts."

However, Petrillo insists that her transition and hormone therapy have reduced her physical advantages. "But then through my experiences and what I learned, I can state clearly … that it doesn't mean that because I was born a man that I will be stronger than a woman," she said.

Last year, World Athletics, the governing body for track and field, implemented a ban on transgender athletes who transitioned after puberty from competing in women's events. However, World Para Athletics, its para counterpart, has not adopted a similar policy, paving the way for Petrillo's historic participation.

According to the AP, the WPA requires transgender athletes in women's competitions to declare their gender identity and provide evidence that their testosterone levels have been below 10 nanomoles per liter of blood for at least 12 months prior to their first competition.

Some competitors have expressed concerns about the fairness of Petrillo's participation in the women's events, acknowledging the physical advantages that she may still possess from her previous life as a male athlete. It remains to be seen how Petrillo's performance will compare to her cisgender competitors in Paris.

Petrillo, who won bronze in the 200 and 400-meter races at last year's World Para Athletics Championships, will have an opportunity to compete for a spot in the finals of the 400 and 200-meter sprints, taking place on September 3 and 7, respectively.
