A 63-year-old postal worker in Dublin, California, is recovering from a traumatic ordeal after she was robbed at gunpoint by two masked assailants on Wednesday afternoon. The incident, which was captured on surveillance video, has left the victim shaken and the community on edge.
The victim, who has chosen to remain anonymous, is a 33-year veteran of the U.S. Postal Service. She was delivering mail in a residential neighborhood east of San Francisco when she was approached by the suspects.
Surveillance footage shows the victim putting mail into a mailbox at around 4:30 p.m. when a masked man dressed in black runs up to her from behind, grabs her, and points a gun at her head. A second masked person then runs up to surround her.
"Somebody came up behind me and ‘boom,’ just hit me, and put a gun to my head," the postal employee told FOX 2. "He said, 'Give me your keys. You don't want to die, do you?' I go, ‘No, no, no.’ So I reached in, got my keys, and he goes, 'Where's your phone? You got two minutes.'"
According to the victim, she initially feared for her life. "I thought, 'I’m going to die,'" she said. However, she managed to remain calm and cooperate with the assailants' demands.
After the robbers took her cellphone and keys to several mailboxes and her truck, they fled the scene on foot. The victim immediately went to a neighbor's home and called 911.
Police and U.S. postal inspectors are still searching for the robbers. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is offering a $150,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
In the aftermath of the attack, the victim is experiencing anxiety and trauma. "I feel anxious, I can't sleep. My heart is pounding," she said, adding that she is seeing a therapist.
Despite her ordeal, the victim hopes to return to her job. "I like my job," she said. "I love my customers. I love to serve them."
The Dublin attack is the latest in a string of crimes against mail workers across the country. In response, Congress is considering new legislation to address the increase in postal carrier robberies.
