A late-night argument between two women escalated into a mass shooting in a popular tourist area of Savannah, Georgia, resulting in injuries to 11 individuals. Police attributed the incident to a high proliferation of guns and called for responsible gun ownership.
**Savannah, Georgia** - Eleven people sustained injuries, including ten from gunfire, following a mass shooting that erupted in the bustling Ellis Square of Savannah, Georgia, on Saturday night. The incident stemmed from an altercation between two women that spilled into the historic district just before midnight.
According to Police Chief Lenny Gunther, the argument originated within an unidentified establishment before escalating into the mass shooting in Ellis Square. "One shot rang out. That triggered other individuals to shoot," Gunther said at a news conference. "We had multiple individuals discharge their weapons to shoot at each other, which resulted in multiple people getting shot."
Investigators are still investigating the cause of the 11th injury. Some victims received treatment at the scene, while others were transported to the hospital. Fortunately, all the shooting victims are expected to make full recoveries.
The victims' ages range from 20 to 38 years old. Police do not suspect gang involvement in the shooting, according to local TV station WTOC.
The Ellis Square shooting was one of five shooting incidents reported in Savannah over the weekend, two of which resulted in fatalities. Mayor Van Johnson attributed the surge in shootings to the proliferation of guns and emphasized the need for reasonable gun control laws.
"We have to insist on smart gun laws," Johnson said at a Sunday news conference. "And then, on the other end, we have to insist that people act responsibly with those weapons."
Police Chief Gunther reassured the public that sufficient staffing would be deployed to maintain safety during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, which typically attracts a significant number of tourists.
Ellis Square, situated in Savannah's historic district, is a popular destination among tourists and locals alike. The square was developed in 2010 and features a large fountain and a life-sized statue of songwriter Johnny Mercer.
