Actor Bryan Cranston has revealed that Matthew Broderick was considered for the iconic role of Walter White in the hit television series "Breaking Bad."
Bryan Cranston, the Emmy Award-winning actor who portrayed the iconic chemistry teacher turned drug lord Walter White in the critically acclaimed television series "Breaking Bad," has recently disclosed that another actor was initially considered for the pivotal role. In a surprising revelation, Cranston shared that Matthew Broderick, the beloved star of the classic comedy film "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," was a potential contender for the character of White.
During a recent appearance on James Corden's SiriusXM show "This Life Of Mine," Cranston delved into the behind-the-scenes details of his casting for "Breaking Bad." The 68-year-old actor explained that the pilot episode for the series was filmed in early 2007, and at that time, he was still committed to his role as Hal in the family sitcom "Malcolm in the Middle." However, Cranston's schedule took an unexpected turn when "Malcolm in the Middle" ended after its seventh season, paving the way for him to take on the transformative role of Walter White.
Cranston acknowledged that Broderick was "considered" for the part but emphasized that it was ultimately series creator and showrunner Vince Gilligan who championed his casting. "Broderick was being considered, but it came to me because of the fact [creator and showrunner] Vince Gilligan said, ‘No, he’s the guy,’" Cranston recalled, expressing his gratitude for Gilligan's unwavering belief in his abilities.
The actor also spoke candidly about his experience playing Walter White, which spanned five unforgettable seasons. While he cherished his time on the show, Cranston revealed that he does not miss portraying the iconic character. "No, I actually don’t miss playing Walter White," he admitted in a previous interview with Fox News Digital. "The reason is because it was such a complete experience for me. It was a very rich, rewarding beginning, middle, and end."
Cranston emphasized that the conclusion of the series provided closure and a sense of completeness for both himself and the character of Walter White. He expressed a desire to preserve the fond memories associated with the role rather than revisiting it. The actor's decision to step away from the iconic character is a testament to his dedication to leaving a lasting legacy in Hollywood.
Looking ahead to the future, Cranston has announced his plans to retire from acting in 2026. The multifaceted actor shared his intentions to focus on his personal life and spend more time with his wife, Robin Dearden. Cranston explained that he wants to level the playing field in their relationship, giving his wife the opportunity to pursue her own interests and passions without being overshadowed by his career.
Cranston's decision to retire is a reflection of his desire to prioritize his well-being and explore new avenues in life. He expressed excitement about the prospect of traveling, spending quality time with loved ones, and pursuing activities outside of the entertainment industry. The actor's departure from Hollywood will mark the end of an illustrious career spanning over four decades, but his legacy as one of the most versatile and acclaimed actors of his generation will undoubtedly endure.
