Matthew McConaughey has fond memories of his mother, Kay, and the lessons she taught him about good manners and gratitude. In a recent appearance on the "Your Mama's Kitchen" podcast with his wife, Camila Alves, the 54-year-old actor recalled how Kay emphasized the importance of expressing appreciation, especially at the breakfast table.

"My mom was not the best cook," McConaughey admitted. "But she always made sure we had hot meals, always." However, it was not the quality of the food that mattered most to Kay, but the attitude with which her children approached it.

"If my attitude wasn’t great, if I didn’t go, ‘Wow, look at this! Thank you for breakfast, mom,’ she’d immediately jump in and say, ‘Get your butt back to your room,'" McConaughey recounted.

Kay's rule was clear: if her children did not express gratitude for the food, they would not be allowed to eat it. "Get back in bed and do not come into this kitchen to have the breakfast that I made you until you’re ready to see the rose in the vase instead of the dust on the table,'" she would say.

For McConaughey and his brothers, this was a "big line" that extended beyond the kitchen. "It was about perspective and gratitude," he explained. Kay would chase her sons back to their bedrooms and make them stay there until they could come back to the table with a positive attitude.

"She goes, ‘Get back in bed.’ You’d get back in bed with your clothes and your school bag and everything and get under the covers," McConaughey recalled. "And she’d go, ‘Now I’m going back in the kitchen. Let’s do this over. You come back in and go, ‘Wow, look, I got scrambled eggs or I got toast again,’" McConaughey recalled.

When McConaughey finally returned to the table with a more appreciative attitude, his mother would welcome him warmly. "She goes, ‘Good morning to you, sunshine. Look at that. Another beautiful day — wasn’t guaranteed.’ That was always the kick. You had to get started on gratitude for the day,'" he said.

Alves, who also appeared on the podcast, shared that she grew up with similar rules about table manners in Brazil. "It’s like you need to know who you’re eating your food from, and if the person has a bad heart, you don’t eat it. You just do not eat that person’s food," she explained.

Alves and McConaughey, who have three children together, continue to enforce similar rules at their own dinner table. "You need to know who you are eating from. And if the person has bad intentions, you never eat that food,'" Alves said, echoing a common Portuguese saying.

"If that person is mad at you, you never eat that food. If you had an argument, you don’t eat it," she continued. "It’s funny because even today with my mom, like, let’s say if we for whatever reason get into a little whatever, I don’t eat her food that day," Alves said.

"No, you don’t," McConaughey agreed. "I skip!" Alves said with a laugh.

McConaughey and Alves have instilled the same values in their children, teaching them the importance of gratitude, kindness, and respect. "We’re trying to raise our kids with that kind of awareness," McConaughey said. "That there’s always something to be grateful for."

Through Kay's unwavering rules and Alves's Brazilian upbringing, gratitude has become a cornerstone of the McConaughey family, shaping the values and behavior of both parents and children alike. As McConaughey aptly put it, "The rose in the vase, not the dust on the table."
