Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is reportedly seeking a renegotiation of his contract, which is set to guarantee him $31 million in 2024. Head coach Sean McVay has acknowledged the situation but has not disclosed any details about potential changes.
Veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford has reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the guaranteed money remaining on his contract with the Los Angeles Rams. According to reports from the NFL Network, Stafford is seeking a renegotiation of the deal, which currently guarantees him an estimated $31 million in 2024.
Rams head coach Sean McVay has confirmed that he has had discussions with Stafford regarding the issue. However, he declined to provide any specific details or a timeline for a potential contract adjustment.
"I've had good dialogue with Matthew," McVay told reporters. "We'll keep those things in house, but he's been working with our guys, and we'll keep those things in house."
General manager Les Snead echoed McVay's sentiments, highlighting the importance of Stafford to the Rams. "We're definitely jacked to have Matthew as our QB," Snead said.
The Rams acquired Stafford in a trade with the Detroit Lions in 2021. He led the team to a Super Bowl victory in his first season in Los Angeles and subsequently signed a four-year extension in 2022.
Injuries to Stafford and wide receiver Cooper Kupp marred the Rams' 2022 campaign, resulting in a disappointing 5-12 record. Stafford, who battled a thumb injury, managed to appear in 15 regular season games, leading the team to the playoffs.
In recent years, players expressing discontent with their contracts has become more common, sometimes leading to absences from practices and offseason workouts. McVay emphasized that the Rams are taking a cautious approach in Stafford's case.
"We're going to take it a day at a time. We'll see," McVay said. "So, we're going to try to figure it out. There's nothing that's more important than making sure that he feels appreciated and he knows how much we love him and want him to lead the way. I think that commitment that I think he wants to have can be reciprocated, and we want to work towards figuring that out."
Stafford's contract situation remains a significant matter for the Rams. The team is eager to retain their Super Bowl-winning quarterback, while Stafford desires a contract that reflects his contributions. The ongoing negotiations will likely have a major impact on the team's future prospects.
