North Carolina quarterback Max Johnson suffered a devastating injury to his right knee in the third quarter of Thursday's game against Minnesota, throwing the Tar Heels' season into disarray.
Johnson, who transferred to UNC from LSU this offseason, was carted off the field after being tackled awkwardly by Minnesota defensive lineman Trill Carter. The injury occurred with just over seven minutes remaining in the third quarter, and the Tar Heels trailing 28-14.
Max Johnson Injury Update: UNC Football QB's Season in Jeopardy
Initial reports indicate that Johnson sustained a dislocation and possible MCL tear. Further tests will be conducted on Friday to determine the full extent of the injury. However, sources close to the program are pessimistic about Johnson's chances of returning this season.
The injury to Johnson is a major blow to the Tar Heels, who were counting on the veteran quarterback to lead their offense in 2023. Johnson had started the season well, completing 65% of his passes for 1,033 yards, eight touchdowns, and two interceptions.
With Johnson out, UNC will turn to either Drake Maye or Jacolby Criswell at quarterback. Maye, a true freshman, started the season as the backup to Johnson but has seen limited action. Criswell is a redshirt sophomore who has not yet seen any game action.
The Tar Heels face a difficult task in replacing Johnson. They have a challenging schedule ahead of them, including games against Florida State, Clemson, and Louisville. Without Johnson, their chances of competing for the ACC Coastal Division title are significantly diminished.
The injury to Johnson also has implications for the future of the UNC football program. Johnson was expected to be the starter for multiple seasons and was seen as a potential franchise quarterback. His injury could force the Tar Heels to look elsewhere for a long-term solution at quarterback.
For now, the focus is on getting Johnson healthy and supporting him through this difficult time. The Tar Heels will hope for the best, but they must also prepare for the possibility that they will be without their starting quarterback for the remainder of the season.
