Democratic Representative Maxine Waters has accused former President Donald Trump of inciting violence and suggested that his supporters may be preparing for a civil war, calling for an investigation by the criminal justice system.
Democratic Representative Maxine Waters of California has sparked controversy by suggesting that former President Donald Trump's supporters should be investigated for possible preparations for a civil war. Her remarks, made during an appearance on MSNBC Sunday, have drawn both criticism and support.
Waters expressed concern about Trump's divisive rhetoric and his previous comments suggesting the possibility of violence if he loses the election. "I'm worried that he's so divisive and that he's talking about retribution, and they're talking about revenge, and I think that that's dangerous," she said. "He's even mentioned civil war at one point, talked about there would be bloodshed."
The congresswoman vowed to seek an investigation by the "criminal justice system" into the activities of Trump's supporters, whom she referred to as "domestic terrorists." "Are they preparing a civil war against us?" she asked. "Should we be concerned about our safety? What is [Trump] doing with this divisive language? It is dangerous."
Waters' comments come amid heightened tensions in the United States following the 2020 presidential election and the January 6th attack on the Capitol. Concerns have been raised about the potential for violence and extremism, and Waters' remarks reflect those fears.
She emphasized her belief that Trump is a threat to democracy and the Constitution. "He's in love with Putin and Russia and Kim Jong-un and North Korea," she said. "It is not just that [Trump is] a criminal, this is a man who disrespects the Constitution and democracy."
Waters also referenced a previous claim she made in May that right-wing organizations connected to Trump are "training up in the hills somewhere" to attack if Biden wins the election in November. "I want to know about all of those right-wing organizations that [Trump] is connected with who are training up in the hills somewhere and targeting what communities they are going to attack," she said.
Waters' call for an investigation has been met with mixed reactions. Some have expressed support for her concerns about potential violence, while others have criticized her for using inflammatory language and making unsubstantiated accusations.
It is important to note that Waters' allegations have not been proven, and they should be treated with caution until further evidence is provided. The investigation she is calling for would need to be conducted by the appropriate authorities, and the results would need to be evaluated carefully.
In the meantime, it is crucial for both sides of the political spectrum to engage in civil discourse and work towards reducing tensions in the country. Violence and extremism are never the answer, and it is essential to prioritize dialogue and understanding above all else.
