Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) expressed concerns over potential violence by right-wing organizations linked to former President Donald Trump if Biden wins the 2024 election. She urged the Justice Department and President Biden to take preemptive measures to prevent such attacks.
Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) has raised alarm over the potential for violence from right-wing groups connected to former President Donald Trump if he loses the 2024 election. The California Democrat discussed Trump's dangerous rhetoric and warned of potential attacks during an appearance on MSNBC's "The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart."
Waters expressed particular concern about right-wing organizations "training up in the hills somewhere" to target specific communities if Biden wins the election. She emphasized the need to identify these groups and their plans to ensure the protection of the country.
Waters pointed to Trump's previous statements alluding to potential violence surrounding the 2024 election. She highlighted his refusal to accept the results of the 2020 election and his rhetoric about "bloodbaths" and "trouble" if he loses.
"He said it in so many different ways," Waters stated. "We should take him seriously. This man does not believe in the Constitution. He wants to be a dictator. This is a dangerous human being."
Waters urged President Biden and the Justice Department to take action to preemptively prevent right-wing violence. She requested information on the department's plans to protect the country and demanded to know the identity of the right-wing groups and their targets.
"I'm going to ask the Justice Department, and I am going to ask the president to tell us what they are going to do to protect this country against violence if [Biden] loses," she remarked.
Despite her concerns about right-wing violence, Waters has previously advocated for confrontational tactics against Republicans. In 2018, she called for her supporters to publicly confront members of Trump's cabinet.
"You get out, and you create a crowd," she said. "And you push back on them. And you tell them they're not welcome anymore, anywhere."
In 2021, she encouraged protesters to escalate their confrontational approach against the police.
Waters' call for preemptive action has drawn mixed reactions. Some have expressed support for her concerns, while others have criticized her past encouragement of confrontation.
Critics argue that her own rhetoric could potentially incite violence and undermine her credibility in calling for unity and non-escalation.
However, Waters maintains that her past statements were taken out of context and that she is merely advocating for the protection of democratic values and the rights of all Americans.
