Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy sharply criticizes Vice President Kamala Harris' presidential campaign, attributing its struggles to her extreme leftist views.

Nearly a year after his ouster as House Speaker, Kevin McCarthy has resurfaced with a scathing critique of Vice President Kamala Harris' presidential campaign. Speaking on "The Ingraham Angle," McCarthy condemned Harris' far-left policies, holding them accountable for her campaign's declining fortunes.

"Harris' campaign started strong, but it's collapsing before our eyes," McCarthy observed. "Her extreme left-wing agenda is out of touch with the American people and is alienating moderate voters."

McCarthy's remarks come amid growing Republican concerns about the prospects of a government shutdown at the end of the fiscal year on September 30. House Republicans are debating a short-term funding bill that would pair continued government funding with a requirement for proof of citizenship for voter registration. However, the plan faces opposition in the Democrat-controlled Senate and from some Republicans.

Five Democrats joined Republicans in supporting the voter registration bill earlier this year, but it has since stalled in the Senate. The White House also opposes the measure. Conservative Republicans like Chip Roy argue that extending government funding without addressing border security and voter integrity would give Democrats an advantage in December spending negotiations.

Former President Donald Trump has publicly urged Republican House members to use a shutdown to force passage of the voter registration bill. With the November House races expected to be close, these weeks could represent Republicans' last chance to achieve their conservative priorities. However, the possibility of a government shutdown just before Election Day could put vulnerable Republican incumbents in a tight spot.

McCarthy's downfall in October 2023 was partly attributed to his handling of government funding negotiations. Last year, he faced opposition from conservative Republicans who voted against a conservative continuing resolution that included a border security provision. McCarthy was forced to pass a "clean" funding extension hours before a partial government shutdown, which ultimately led to his ouster.

Current House Speaker Mike Johnson is navigating a similar political web, trying to avoid a shutdown while appeasing both conservative and moderate members of his party. It remains unclear whether Johnson will face the same fate as his predecessor.

McCarthy's sharp criticism of Kamala Harris' campaign reflects the growing Republican concern about her candidacy. As House Republicans grapple with government funding and conservative priorities, the shadow of McCarthy's ouster looms large, underscoring the delicate balance that Speaker Johnson must maintain.
