Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg alleges that the Biden administration pressured the platform to censor COVID-19 related information. This accusation follows a Supreme Court ruling against GOP attorneys general who accused the White House of colluding with social media companies to suppress free speech.
Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, has accused the Biden administration of pressuring the platform to censor COVID-19-related information. In a letter to House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, Zuckerberg alleged that Biden officials "repeatedly pressured our team for months to censor certain COVID-19 content, including humor and satire, and expressed a lot of frustration with our teams when we didn’t agree."
This accusation comes after the Supreme Court sided with the Biden administration in a 6-3 decision against the GOP attorneys general of Missouri and Louisiana. The suit alleged that the White House colluded with social media companies to suppress free speech, but the court found no "concrete link" between the accusations and the conduct of government officials.

However, Republicans, who have long accused Biden allies of trying to censor social media content with which they disagree, see Zuckerberg's letter as vindication of those concerns. Representative Nancy Mace, chair of the House Oversight Committee's cybersecurity subcommittee, wrote to President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris demanding that the White House turn over any documents detailing efforts to suppress information. Mace urged the administration to "cease and desist" any such activity with social media platforms, citing the upcoming national election.
Zuckerberg's revelation comes at a time when the presidential election contest is getting into full swing amid concerns about the political influence of social media companies. Facebook and Google have faced scrutiny for their handling of information about the July 13, 2024, assassination attempt on President Trump. Representative James Comer wrote to these companies in 2024 to inquire about their decision to limit the visibility of information about the incident.

Mace's request for documents from the White House includes any records of communication with social media companies and communications between federal employees about such censorship. She has set a deadline of September 25 for the White House to comply.
The White House has not yet responded to Mace's request or Zuckerberg's accusations. However, the accusations have raised concerns about the potential for government censorship and the role of social media companies in shaping public discourse.
