After a string of blown saves and a high ERA, the New York Mets have decided to remove Edwin Díaz from his closer role and opt for a committee approach.
The New York Mets have made a significant change to their bullpen, taking Edwin Díaz out of his closer role and going with a closer-by-committee approach. The move comes amid Díaz's struggles to begin the 2024 season.
Díaz, who was not used in the Mets' 7-3 win over the Miami Marlins on Sunday, has a 10.80 ERA over his last eight appearances, blowing three of his last four save chances. His struggles have prompted the Mets to make the switch, hoping to find more stability in the late innings.
The committee approach will be in place until Díaz "regains his confidence," according to the New York Post, which first reported the news. The Mets believe that by taking the pressure off Díaz, he can work his way back to his previous form.
Díaz, a two-time All-Star, was a key part of the Mets' success in 2022, when they won 101 games. His iconic trumpet-heavy walk-up music, "Narcos," became a fan favorite. However, his struggles in 2024 have left the Mets searching for alternatives.
One of the candidates to fill the closer role could be David Robertson, who has a career 3.11 ERA and 142 saves. Robertson pitched for the Mets in 2023 and was reliable in the late innings. He has a 0.90 ERA over his last five appearances in 2024.
Another option is Drew Smith, who has a 2.93 ERA over his last 10 appearances. Smith has also shown the ability to close games, converting four of his six save opportunities in 2024.
The Mets are hoping that the closer-by-committee approach will provide them with more stability in the bullpen as they aim to contend for a World Series title. Díaz will have to work his way back to his previous form, and the Mets will need him to regain his confidence if they want to succeed in 2024.
While the move to remove Díaz from the closer role is a setback, the Mets believe it is the best decision for the team in the long run. Díaz has a proven track record of success, and the Mets are confident that he can return to his previous form and be a valuable asset for their bullpen.
