Michael Cohen's admission to stealing from the Trump Organization during cross-examination sent shockwaves through CNN and MSNBC, leaving hosts and guests reeling from the revelation. The prosecution's failure to present this evidence earlier has raised questions about its strategy.
On Monday, during the third day of cross-examination in the case against former President Donald Trump, ex-Trump fixer Michael Cohen made a startling admission: he had stolen $60,000 from the Trump Organization. This revelation, which came as a surprise to many, has sent shockwaves through the media landscape, particularly CNN and MSNBC.
CNN hosts and guests expressed disbelief and astonishment. Jake Tapper, a CNN anchor, stated, "I have to say, I'm still kind of reeling from the revelation that Michael Cohen stole money from the Trump Organization and that wasn't, at least to my knowledge, that the prosecution didn't get that out earlier."
Co-anchor Laura Coates echoed Tapper's sentiment, saying she was "shocked" by the timing of the news. Coates emphasized the significance of this revelation, stating, "It goes to the heart of the actual case."
CNN's senior legal analyst Elie Honig labeled Cohen's theft a "more serious crime" than falsifying business records, which Trump is accused of doing in relation to payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels and Playboy's Karen McDougal.
Over at MSNBC, the reaction was equally strong. Yasmin Vossoughian, an MSNBC anchor, described the exchange between Cohen and defense attorney Todd Blanche as "momentous."
MSNBC legal guest Bernarda Villalona highlighted the potential impact on the jury, noting that if they find Cohen lied about a material fact, they could disregard his entire testimony.
The prosecution's failure to highlight Cohen's theft during its questioning has raised concerns. Tapper questioned why this evidence was not presented sooner, as it could have further damaged Cohen's credibility.
The Trump Organization has declined to comment on Cohen's admission.
The revelation of Cohen's theft has added another layer of intrigue to the ongoing case against Trump. It remains to be seen how this new information will influence the jury's deliberations.
