PGA Tour star Xander Schauffele admits to being "embarrassed" after losing to the NBA legend in a round of golf.
Jordan, who has long been known for his passion for golf, regularly hit the links during his playing days with the Chicago Bulls and Washington Wizards. He is also the majority investor in Grove XXIII in Hobe Sound, Florida. Despite being 61 years old, Jordan is apparently still capable of beating professional golfers.
Schauffele recently revealed that he once played a round with Jordan during a practice session before the Memorial Tournament. Former PGA Tour golfer Cole Knost inquired if Schauffele had ever faced Jordan on the golf course. Schauffele admitted to trying to "s--- talk" Jordan, but it backfired.
Schauffele explained that Jordan took advantage of some mistakes on the final three holes.
"I pancaked him on his stroke holes, and I started talking s--- to him, and he got all quiet and focused," Schauffele said. "And then he birdied 15-16, no strokes. Beat me straight up. And I was like, ‘All right.’"
CBS Sports captured the exchange between Schauffele and Knost.
Schauffele finished the Memorial Tournament tied for eighth place, shooting 1-under par. He is now focused on the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2, where he is considered one of the favorites to win. His tee time is set for 1:14 p.m. ET on Thursday.
Jordan's competitive spirit has been well-documented throughout his career. He is known for his intense desire to win and his ability to push himself and those around him to achieve greatness. Even in retirement, it seems that Jordan's competitive fire still burns brightly.
Schauffele's experience playing against Jordan provides a glimpse into the legendary athlete's competitive nature and his ability to perform at a high level even in a different sport. It also serves as a reminder that even the best athletes can be humbled by the greats.
