Michael Landon's Stubbornness About His Health: A Valuable Lesson for All

Leslie Landon Matthews, daughter of late actor Michael Landon, shares her father's history of prioritizing his health and the impact it had on his life.

Michael Landon was an iconic actor who brought smiles to millions of faces as the beloved patriarch in "Little House on the Prairie." However, behind the scenes, Landon struggled with a stubbornness that ultimately compromised his health.

According to his daughter, Leslie Landon Matthews, Landon had a tendency to neglect his check-ups. "He put his health aside," Matthews explained. "I think he put it aside."

This disregard for his well-being had severe consequences. At age 54, Landon was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, a deadly disease with a low survival rate. He succumbed to the illness just three months after receiving his diagnosis.

Reflecting on her father's experience, Matthews believes that Landon would deeply regret his actions if he were alive today. "I think if my dad was alive today, he would say, 'Boy, I blew it,'" she said.

Matthews's words serve as a poignant reminder of the importance of prioritizing one's health. She emphasizes the need to schedule regular check-ups and be proactive in mitigating potential health risks.

"You need to schedule [your checkups] just like you would for anything else in your life and make it a priority," Matthews advised.

Today, Matthews is dedicated to raising awareness about pancreatic cancer through her involvement with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN). The organization hosts annual fundraising events like PurpleStride, which aims to unite survivors, loved ones, and supporters in the fight against the deadly disease.

PanCAN's efforts are particularly crucial because pancreatic cancer has a high mortality rate and limited treatment options. Early detection is essential, but there is currently no standard screening test available.

As Matthews points out, pancreatic cancer can have a hereditary component. Individuals with family members who have been diagnosed with the disease are encouraged to undergo pre-screening tests to assess their risk.

"For other people out there who've had family members with pancreatic cancer, there are some pre-screening tests that can be done now," Matthews said.

Michael Landon's legacy extends beyond his acting career. He taught his children the importance of family, love, and forgiveness. Despite the tragedy of his untimely demise, his family continues to honor his memory and support others facing similar challenges.

"I have a very strong faith in God," Matthews said. "That brings me a lot of peace. It's been an important part of raising my kids, my marriage with my husband and obviously, with my dad."

In the face of adversity, Matthews finds strength in her faith and the enduring presence of her father. "You can't help but feel overwhelmed in your heart and just have such an overwhelming respect for what my dad did during his life, the shows that he created and the message that he tried to get out about loving people, loving family," she said. "That's how we feel his presence, too."
