A Michigan judge was left astonished after a defendant with a suspended driver's license dialed into a virtual court hearing while behind the wheel of a car, prompting the judge to revoke his bond.
A Michigan judge was left in utter disbelief when a defendant charged with driving with a suspended license dialed into a virtual court hearing while actively driving a car.
The May 15 hearing in Ann Arbor involved Corey Harris, who had been charged with driving while his license was suspended. As the assistant public defender introduced herself to Judge Cedric Simpson, Harris joined the Zoom call.
"Mr. Harris, are you driving?" Simpson asked the defendant, a question that sent shockwaves through the virtual courtroom.
"Actually, I'm pulling into my doctor's office actually," Harris replied, unperturbed by the judge's inquiry. "Just give me one second. I'm parking right now."
Simpson watched with growing impatience as Harris brought his vehicle to a stop. Once the proceedings resumed, Harris' attorney requested an adjournment for several weeks.
"OK, so maybe I don't understand something. This is a driving while license suspended [case]," Simpson stated, his voice laced with incredulity. "And he was just driving, and he doesn't have a license."
Harris seemed at a loss for words as the judge's astonishment turned into disbelief.
"I don't even know why he would do that," Simpson lamented. "So, the defendant's bond is revoked in this matter."
He ordered Harris to turn himself in to the Washtenaw County Jail by 6 p.m. that day.
A stunned Harris could be heard whispering "Oh my God" in the background as his attorney promised to call him shortly.
The incident has garnered significant attention online, highlighting the consequences of driving with a suspended license and the importance of respecting the authority of the court.
Legal experts have weighed in on the incident, emphasizing the seriousness of the defendant's actions.
"This is a case of blatant disregard for the law," said one legal analyst. "The defendant was not only driving with a suspended license but also showed a complete lack of respect for the court by dialing into the hearing while actively operating a vehicle."
The judge's swift and decisive action sends a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated. It remains unclear what charges Harris may face for driving with a revoked bond, but he likely faces significant penalties.
As the case continues, it serves as a reminder of the importance of obeying the law, not just for the safety of oneself and others, but also for the integrity of the legal system.
