After being coached by Harbaugh for three years at Michigan, Colson was drafted by the Chargers, where Harbaugh is now the head coach.
Former Michigan linebacker Junior Colson was drafted by the Los Angeles Chargers in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, reuniting him with his former coach, Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh, who coached Colson for all three of his years at Michigan, returned to the NFL after nine seasons in Ann Arbor to lead the Chargers.
Colson was the first of three consecutive Michigan players taken in the draft, with running back Blake Corum going to the Rams and tight end Roman Wilson to the Steelers. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy was selected 10th overall by the Minnesota Vikings.
Harbaugh himself called Colson to inform him of his selection by the Chargers. During the call, Harbaugh exclaimed his signature phrase, "Who's got it better than us?" to which Colson replied, "Nobody."
Shortly after the pick, Harbaugh belted out the Michigan fight song, "Hail to the Victors." Colson's selection by the Chargers marked a special moment for the two, who had a close relationship during their time together at Michigan.
Colson played a key role in Michigan's success last season, recording a team-leading 95 tackles and setting a career-high with 44 solo tackles. His contributions were crucial to Michigan's 15-0 record and appearance in the College Football Playoff.
The Chargers' defense ranked 28th in the NFL last season, making Colson's addition a welcome one. His tackling ability and leadership on the field will be valuable assets for a defense looking to improve.
Harbaugh's familiarity with Colson's game and his ability to motivate players will make him an important asset for the Chargers. The reunion between Harbaugh and Colson is sure to create a positive atmosphere in the locker room and on the field.
Colson's excitement to play for Harbaugh again was evident in his reaction to the news. "It's surreal," he said. "I can't wait to get back to work with him and help this team win."
Harbaugh also expressed his excitement about coaching Colson again. "Junior is a special player and a special person," he said. "I'm thrilled to have him on our team and can't wait to see what he can accomplish in the NFL."
The bond between Harbaugh and Colson is a testament to the impact that coaches can have on their players' lives. Their reunion in Los Angeles is sure to be a successful one, both for the Chargers and for the two individuals involved.
