Mighty Doom, the adorable yet violent mobile spin-off of the legendary Doom franchise, will be shutting down on August 7th due to the closure of its developer, Alpha Dog Games. The in-app purchases have been disabled today, and players can now request refunds through Bethesda's official support site.
Mighty Doom, with its top-down perspective and charmingly gory aesthetic, aimed to bring the essence of the Doom franchise to mobile devices. After two years in soft launch, it finally arrived on app stores over a year ago. However, its run has unfortunately been cut short after less than two years.
The demise of Mighty Doom is part of a larger wave of studio closures and layoffs within Microsoft's gaming division. Tango Gameworks, the developer behind Hi-Fi Rush, has been shuttered, as have Arkane Austin, Alpha Dog, and Roundhouse Studios. These closures have raised concerns about the management of Microsoft's gaming operations.
For players who have invested in Mighty Doom's in-game currency, refunds can be requested through Bethesda's support site. However, the shutdown leaves a void in the mobile gaming landscape, particularly for fans of the Doom franchise.
While Mighty Doom will be missed, there are still plenty of great mobile games available. Our list of the best mobile games of 2024 (so far) offers a comprehensive selection of high-quality titles in various genres.
For those looking ahead, our list of the most anticipated mobile games of the year provides a glimpse into the exciting titles coming soon. These games offer the potential to fill the void left by Mighty Doom and provide new and immersive mobile gaming experiences.
The closure of Mighty Doom and Alpha Dog Games is a reminder of the ever-evolving nature of the gaming industry. While it's sad to see a game like Mighty Doom go, it also highlights the importance of supporting the developers who create these experiences. In the meantime, there are still plenty of great mobile games to enjoy, and exciting new releases to look forward to.
