Suspected militants have targeted a girls' school in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, causing significant damage to the structure but no reported injuries. The attack has been condemned by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the Pakistani government.
Suspected militants have launched an attack on a girls' school in Shawa, a town in the North Waziristan district of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The attack, which occurred on Wednesday night, involved the use of an explosive device to destroy the private Aafia Islamic Girls Model School, where 150 girls studied.
According to local police chief Amjad Wazir, the attackers also beat up the school guard before fleeing the scene. No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but suspicion has fallen on Islamic militants who have targeted girls' schools in the province in recent years.
UNICEF has strongly condemned the attack, labeling it a "despicable and cowardly act that could jeopardize the future of many young and talented girls." Abdullah Fadil, the UNICEF representative in Pakistan, emphasized the heinous nature of the crime, particularly in a remote and underserved area where access to education is crucial for national progress.
The attack comes amidst the Pakistani government's ongoing efforts to address the issue of out-of-school children. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif declared an education emergency on Wednesday, pledging to enroll 26 million children who are currently not in school.
Pakistan has witnessed multiple attacks on girls' schools, especially in the northwestern Swat Valley and other parts of the northwest. The Pakistani Taliban, known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), were once in control of the former tribal regions, including North Waziristan. However, TTP was evicted from Swat and other areas in recent years.
TTP is a separate group but an ally of the Afghan Taliban, who seized power in Afghanistan in 2021. The resurgence of militant activity in Pakistan has raised concerns about the safety of girls' education in the country.
The attack on the Aafia Islamic Girls Model School has drawn widespread condemnation and has highlighted the need for increased investment in protecting education facilities, especially for girls, in Pakistan. It is essential to ensure that all children have equal access to education and that they can attend school in a safe and secure environment.
