Minnesota businesses are facing significant challenges under the leadership of Democratic Governor Tim Walz, citing rising crime, high taxes, and burdensome regulations as major obstacles to growth and prosperity.
In the wake of the George Floyd riots that ravaged Minneapolis in 2020, Thurston Jewelers, a long-standing business on Lake Street, found itself at the mercy of looters who ransacked its inventory and shattered its display cases. Owner Lloyd Drilling managed to salvage some of the more valuable pieces, but the store's reputation and customer base were severely damaged.
The city's push to defund the police has exacerbated the situation, with homeless populations swelling and open-air drug use becoming commonplace. Petty crime has become a constant threat, deterring customers from venturing into downtown Minneapolis.

Koby Rich, owner of Rich Girl's Cosmetics, has had to endure repeated vandalism, with his front door window being broken multiple times. He laments the financial burden of constantly repairing the damage, which impedes his small business's ability to thrive.
Jim Schultz, representing the Minnesota Private Business Council, places the blame squarely on Governor Walz. "Reckless policies when it comes to policing and crime" have led to a surge in violent crime, creating an unsafe environment for businesses and residents alike.

Minnesota's economic competitiveness has also taken a hit under Walz's leadership. The state boasts the highest corporate tax rate in the nation at 9.8%, stifling job growth and economic development. Doug Loon of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce points to missed opportunities for job creation due to the Governor's prioritization of other agendas.
The chamber's rankings paint a grim picture for Minnesota's economy, with the state now languishing at 47th in the nation for job creation and 46th for Gross Domestic Product.

Kent Bergman, owner of the Campanelle restaurant in Lino Lakes, has faced persistent financial struggles under the weight of taxes and regulations. Despite enduring COVID-19 lockdowns, he still relies on his own savings to stay afloat, unable to earn a profit. He decries the state's policies as making it nearly impossible for small businesses and restaurants to succeed.
The challenges faced by Minnesota businesses underscore the profound impact of progressive policies on economic growth and prosperity. Governor Walz's leadership has created an environment that fosters crime, deters investment, and stifles job creation, leaving businesses and the state's economy in a precarious position.
