British TV doctor and Daily Mail columnist Dr. Michael Mosley has been missing for three days after he vanished during a hike on the Greek island of Symi. Search efforts, involving divers, coast guard, and volunteers, are ongoing as authorities investigate what may have happened to the 67-year-old.
Police, the fire brigade, coast guard, and volunteers on the Greek island of Symi are continuing their search for British TV presenter Dr. Michael Mosley, who has been missing since Wednesday after going on a hike.
Mosley, 67, was last seen on Wednesday afternoon near the village of Pedi on St. Nicholas Beach. His wife, Dr. Clare Bailey, alerted authorities after he failed to return from his hike.
Divers and patrol boats have joined the search efforts on Friday, scouring the coast for any sign of Mosley. The coast guard confirmed that all their patrol boats and private and commercial boats in the area are assisting in the search.
Police, fire brigade, coast guard, and volunteers are searching both on and offshore the small mountainous island in the eastern Aegean, using a helicopter, drones, and a rescue dog. Temperatures on the island have reached 104 degrees Fahrenheit during the search.
Mosley, known for his appearances on British broadcaster ITV's "This Morning" and for popularizing the 5:2 diet, was not carrying his mobile phone when he disappeared, making search efforts more difficult.
Fears are growing that Mosley may have had an accident. "Probably he fell into the sea and washed away, or something else has happened," Symi Mayor Lefteris Papakalodoukas told Reuters. "It's impossible to be where the searches are taking place. It is a small area and has been thoroughly searched."
A security team from the nearby island of Rhodes is expected to arrive on Friday to assist with the investigation. "So far, we don't have evidence of what may have happened, whether it is an accident ... or something else," a senior police official told Reuters.
Police are looking into reports that Mosley had spoken with locals halfway through his walk. Symi, a sparsely populated island about 10 miles long with 2,500 residents, is known for its remote beaches, some of which are accessible only by boat.
Mayor Papakalodoukas dismissed speculation of foul play. "We have zero crime on our island. We are a small community, and we are all upset," he said.
Mosley is a renowned health expert who has authored several best-selling books on diet and fitness, including "The Fast 800," "The Clever Guts Diet," "The Fast Diet," "Fast Exercise," and "The 8-Week Blood Sugar Diet."
He has also been a regular guest on British broadcaster ITV's "This Morning." Mosley and his wife, Dr. Clare Bailey, have four children together.
