The race for the National and American League MVPs is heating up, with Mookie Betts and Juan Soto remaining the favorites but facing challenges from within their own teams. With Ronald Acuña Jr.'s season-ending ACL injury, the NL race has taken a significant turn.
The 2023 Major League Baseball season has reached its midway point, and the MVP races in both the National and American Leagues are heating up. Mookie Betts and Juan Soto remain the favorites, but they are facing stiff competition from within their own dugouts.
Mookie Betts of the Los Angeles Dodgers remains the frontrunner for the National League MVP, with odds at +135. Betts has been a consistent force for the Dodgers, batting .312 with 12 home runs and 35 RBIs. He is also among the league leaders in stolen bases, with 15.
However, Betts is not the only MVP candidate in the Dodgers' lineup. Shohei Ohtani, who joined the Dodgers from the Los Angeles Angels this season, has enjoyed a phenomenal debut season with the team. Ohtani is batting .336 with 13 home runs and 39 RBIs, while also posting a 2.84 ERA and 111 strikeouts in 62.2 innings pitched.
Ohtani's versatility makes him a unique candidate for the MVP award. He is the first player in MLB history to lead his league in both home runs and stolen bases, and his ability to contribute on both sides of the ball makes him a formidable threat.
Other contenders in the NL MVP race include William Contreras of the Milwaukee Brewers (+750), Bryce Harper of the Philadelphia Phillies (+1000), and Marcell Ozuna of the Atlanta Braves (+2000).
Juan Soto of the New York Yankees is the current favorite for the American League MVP, with odds at +300. Soto is batting .321 with 15 home runs and 43 RBIs, and he leads the league in on-base percentage (.460) and slugging percentage (.642).
Soto's teammate, Aaron Judge, has emerged as a strong challenger to Soto's throne. Judge started the season slowly, but he has turned it around in recent weeks and is now batting .290 with 18 home runs and 45 RBIs. Judge also leads the league in OPS (1.050) and WAR (3.3).
Other contenders in the AL MVP race include Bobby Witt Jr. of the Kansas City Royals (+390), Gunnar Henderson of the Baltimore Orioles (+480), and Kyle Tucker of the Houston Astros (+600).
The NL MVP race took a significant turn with the news that Ronald Acuña Jr. of the Atlanta Braves suffered a season-ending ACL injury. Acuña was the unanimous NL MVP in 2023, and he was hoping for a repeat performance this year. However, he was well behind last season's record-setting pace of 41 homers and 73 stolen bases.
Acuña's injury is a major blow to the Braves' hopes of winning the World Series. He is one of the most dynamic players in baseball, and his absence will be felt throughout the lineup.
The injury also opens the door for other players in the NL to make a run at the MVP award. Betts and Ohtani remain the favorites, but Contreras, Harper, and Ozuna could all benefit from Acuña's absence.
The MVP races in both the National and American Leagues are still wide open, and there are several players who could emerge as contenders. With the season now at its midway point, the competition is sure to heat up in the coming weeks.
