Democratic Senate candidates in battleground states are distancing themselves from President Biden's policies and moving toward more centrist positions as polls show Biden trailing former President Trump.
Facing historically low approval ratings and pressure from voters frustrated with the direction of the country, Democratic senators up for re-election are distancing themselves from President Biden and adopting more moderate positions in a bid to win over key swing states.
In battleground states like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Nevada, and Ohio, Democratic incumbents are emphasizing their bipartisan credentials and distancing themselves from Biden's policies, which they believe are unpopular with voters.
Senator Jacky Rosen of Nevada is running on her record of working with Republicans and has been a vocal supporter of bipartisanship. She has highlighted her efforts to address issues such as healthcare and education, while avoiding taking extreme positions that could alienate centrist voters.
Similarly, Senator Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, a key swing state, has distanced himself from the defund the police movement and has adopted a populist message on the economy, attacking "greedflation" and highlighting his support for working-class families.
In Wisconsin, Senator Tammy Baldwin has positioned herself as a "pro worker" candidate and has expressed opposition to Biden's unfreezing of Iranian assets, while emphasizing her willingness to work with both Democrats and Republicans.
Moderate Democratic candidates are also facing pressure from their Republican opponents to take more moderate positions. In Ohio, Republican challenger JD Vance has criticized Senator Sherrod Brown for aligning with Biden's agenda and has accused him of being too progressive.
Brown, however, has recently broken with Biden on several issues, including his electric vehicle tax credit plan and his repeal of Title 42. He has also taken more centrist positions on immigration, supporting measures to secure the border.
In Montana, Republican challenger Tim Sheehy has labeled Senator Jon Tester "two-faced" and accused him of taking more conservative positions during election years. Tester has recently backed the Laken Riley Act, which would require federal officials to arrest illegal immigrants charged with certain crimes, and has criticized Biden's handling of the border.
While Democratic incumbents are shifting to the center, Biden faces accusations of moving further to the left on issues such as the conflict between Israel and Hamas and student loan handouts. Republicans allege that Biden is siding with progressive activists in his own party in an attempt to win over voters in key swing areas like Dearborn, Michigan.
Biden has made a noticeable effort in recent months to win back his Democratic base by holding events with progressives and issuing a "flurry of left-leaning policy announcements," according to Axios. However, Biden's approval numbers remain low, and his unpopularity could be a major liability for Democratic candidates in swing states.
Polling shows that while Democratic incumbents currently lead in key Senate races, Biden trails Trump in almost every single battleground state. Republicans are growing more optimistic about taking back control of the Senate, which Democrats currently hold 51-49.
