MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace has issued a grim warning about the potential consequences for press freedom if former President Donald Trump is re-elected in November. During her "Deadline: White House" show on Monday, Wallace expressed her concern that the free press and her own program could be eliminated if Trump returns to the Oval Office.

Wallace's comments came in the context of the recent White House Correspondents' Dinner, where President Joe Biden urged the press to recognize the significance of the upcoming election. She noted that this year's dinner carried a "dark undercurrent" due to the possibility of a Trump resurgence.

"The annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner is one of the symptoms, one of the signs of a healthy, functioning democracy," Wallace remarked. "But behind the levity, though, there was something darker, a darker undercurrent... And it was more profoundly serious."

Wallace highlighted the potential for Trump to abolish existing norms and undermine fundamental freedoms. "At this exact time next year, depending on what happens in November, seven months from now, we can’t say for certain that there would even be a White House Correspondents’ Dinner or even a free press or even a White House press corps. Right? You don’t have to have one. Could be another norm Trump blows up," she stated.

The MSNBC host's remarks were punctuated by an emotional response to a clip of Biden cautioning journalists about Trump's ongoing attacks on democracy. "I’ve seen that toast a bunch of times, but it landed very differently this year," Wallace said. "Because depending what happens in November, seven months from right now, this time next year, I might not be sitting here. There might not be a White House Correspondents’ Dinner or free press."

Wallace emphasized that the threat extended beyond the press to other freedoms and the rule of law itself. "Our democracy won’t exactly fall apart immediately without it, but the real threat looms larger. A candidate with outward disdain not just for a free press, but for all of our freedoms and for the rule of law itself," she stressed.

The Trump campaign dismissed Wallace's comments as unsubstantiated claims, accusing her of displaying "Trump Derangement Syndrome." However, the Democratic National Committee has echoed Wallace's concerns, suggesting that the White House Correspondents' Dinner could indeed be terminated if Trump regains the presidency.

Wallace's ominous warning underscores the heightened anxiety within the media industry about the potential consequences of a Trump re-election. Her remarks serve as a reminder of the importance of preserving a free and independent press in a functioning democracy. As the election draws closer, the future of press freedom hangs in the balance.
