NBA commissioner Adam Silver remains tight-lipped about the league's impending media rights deal, despite growing speculation that traditional partner TNT may lose out to rivals Disney/ESPN, NBC, and Amazon. While Silver expressed optimism about the future of 'Inside the NBA,' he acknowledged that negotiations are ongoing and the outcome is unpredictable.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver has declined to declare a victor in the race to secure the league's lucrative media rights, leaving the door open for multiple potential suitors.
In recent days, rumors have swirled that Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), parent company of TNT, could potentially lose its broadcasting rights to competitors Disney/ESPN, NBC, and Amazon. TNT and the NBA have shared a partnership for decades, but the landscape could soon shift.
According to the Sports Business Journal, the NBA plans to formalize deals with Disney, Amazon, and NBC. However, WBD leadership will have the opportunity to match the "total value" of other offers before contracts are finalized.
Despite the reports, Silver maintains that negotiations are ongoing, with no official announcement forthcoming. "We're all still talking. Who knows how it's gonna work out," Silver told TMZ.
The future home of NBA games has become a hot topic, particularly due to the popularity of TNT's flagship studio show "Inside the NBA," anchored by Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Shaquille O'Neal, and Kenny Smith.
Johnson has stated his intention to remain with the network regardless of the media rights outcome. Barkley, however, reportedly possesses a clause in his contract that allows him to leave if TNT loses the NBA package.
Silver expressed confidence that at least two of the show's stars will continue to cover the NBA, irrespective of the broadcasting rights holder. "We're never gonna lose Charles and Kenny," Silver said. "They're always going to be covering the NBA... I can't imagine those guys [on 'Inside the NBA'] won't be performing and announcing together in the future."
The league's current media rights deal expires at the end of the 2024-25 season.
In other sports media developments, WBD recently acquired a five-year sublicensing deal with Disney/ESPN, granting the company rights to first round and quarterfinal College Football Playoff games.
The ongoing saga surrounding the NBA's media rights highlights the ever-evolving landscape of sports broadcasting and the battle for exclusive content in the rapidly changing media ecosystem. As negotiations continue, fans await the eventual resolution of this high-stakes chase for the rights to one of the most popular sports leagues in the world.
